You have to keep your foot parallel to the ground. If your heel hits first like a normal step might that thing is coming off. So the steps have to be short and your body has to stay fairly upright. And they are a more convenient option for anyone with back or knee issues that make bending down difficult, who are likely to be takin stiff, clipped steps anyways.
I can't speak for everyone but nobody I know (myself included) feels like we're hot in flip flops. They are convenient. That's pretty much the first, last, and only reason for their existence.
Slip on Vans for convenience. Flip flops are for the pool/beach.
