Humans have a hand in cross breeding and genetic engineering based on experimenting with less intelligent species.
We've created new breeds of dogs, cats, etc. We're bioengineering everything at our disposal. As time goes on, I'm sure we'll see more and more.
If intelligent life from other planets has visited earth, we can't assume that they wouldn't have also played around with the life here.
Suppose they visited Earth when there was only ocean life and decided just to tweak things a little. Or suppose they do this on an ongoing basis at different times.
