So he's a better boxer because he generated more money? If that's the case, Joe Johnson is a better basketball player than Michael Jordan was.
That's not what the thread is about..I asked if he's the greatest athlete businessman and if he's surpassed Magic or DK in that regard(or Tiger, I suppose)..

Tiger was already a billion dollar athlete... He was on top of his game, and he was the face of endorsements. He should've realized to stop before his wife discovered his cheating ways. Now he's just your run of the mill golfer. Golf has suffered because of him. People gave a about golf because of Tiger.

I don't think Tiger was self-made, though..he was the best golfer in the world, and happened to be part Black, which opened up the sport to a whole new facet of marketing and new demographic..

Mayweather is doing this in a sport that nobody cares about, and they only buy his fights to watch him lose..

He made himself by having a special skill in golf imo. And then he undid all that by being a coke-snorting nympho. Oh, professional athletes.

You can't say nobody cares about it then say it's making the most money. What, are a handful of people paying exorbitant prices for tickets and rights to bouts no one wants to see? I don't think so.

It's all about the promotion. I've never watched either of them fight, so they've not made anything off of me, but plenty do.

Oscar drew big PPV crowds as well, but a lot of people couldn't have identified him in a lineup to save their lives. As far as being a businessman, he's got businessmen working for him but I wouldn't call a guy who cannot read a "businessman". He's a recipient of a lot of hype and a fantastic fighter, but the promotions are someone else.

    1) Floyd
    2) Kobe
    3) Max Scherzer
I'd put Aids and Dk ahead of Kobe imo. Mamba is just starting to build his business interests as he closes his basketball career.

Even Shaq is better as an athlete-businessman. Also has a Phd to boot.

Greatest athlete businessman of all-time, tbh?

Dad Killer was more of a figurehead that has milked Jordans..is between Floyd and Aids Johnson?

Floyd picks his fights, everybody hates him, people pay to watch his fights just to see him lose, he's a convicted abuser of women, he can't read, he's widely considered to be a boring fighter..yet he just made $150 million for 1 match in a dead sport..
Pretty sure Magic would trade 3/4 his fortune to have never seroconverted, so I'll take Floyd.

Yeah cuz Ali and Jordan got booed in their own home town after winning
Floyd getting booed kinda reminded me of Rocky 5 when Tommy Gunn gets booed after winning the heavyweight belt.

Except that Tommy Gunn fight was infinitely more entertaining.

I agree we need Floyd to get into a street fight with Mike Tyson just like Gunn did with Rocky in the movie. Now that would be entertaining.

Hard to argue with OP, we'll see how he handles his money after he retires though.

I thought it was more shocking seeing the Russian crowd root for Rocky in the end against Drago. Unreal. Never saw that coming, especially in the Cold War era.

Sugar Ray Robinson/Leonard and maybe Hearns. After that it's Floyd for sure.

You act like he's actually responsible for his earnings. He's not. He doesn't even make his own business decisions. He has other people (who, by the way, can read) make those decisions for him.

Athletes don't even control their own promoting. They have promoters, publicists, agents, representatives, etc who do all the work for them. All they do is show up where they're told.

wouldnt even put Hearns in there. Dude lost every big fight except vs Duran he's ever been in. Can't forget many of the great older fighters. Henry Armstrong for sure. But in the modern day 147ers, Floyd is probably top five definitely top 10 for sure.

Ok, so if it's just $, is Floyd beating the soccer stars?

Also one Floyd retires, is he getting any $? Meanwhile Jordan won't ever die. He'll still be pimping sneakers and underwear as a hologram.

    LeBron should pass Floyd too.

I just think Floyd has no brand to bank on once his fights end.

He earned $73 million in salary, bonuses and endorsement income in 2013 to take the top spot on our list of the world’s highest-paid soccer players and is now one of the highest-paid athletes in the world. Last year Tiger Woods took that top honor after making $78.1 million, followed by Roger Federer who made $71.5 million. Their earnings were based on the 12-months ending June 2013.

From Forbes, referring to Ronaldo. Just curious how often Floyd has gotten plus $70 mill fights. And whether his crew of retainers is significantly more draining than LeBron, Ronald, or tiger. You shouldn't be declared greatest $ sportsman if you blow it all on friends or similar dumb .
