The Taliban didn't even exist during the Soviet years. Sure some agents of Al-Qaeda were around from the middle east, but the Northern Alliance group was the main revolutionary factor in Afghanistan during the Soviet struggle.
The Taliban was created in Pakistan during that time with the help of the Saudis and Pakistan's wahabbi president General Zia. They trained the would-be Taliban in the 80s and early 90s and with the help of the Pakistani intelligence unleashed this group unto Afghanistan to fight against the Northern Alliance group and take over Afghanistan in the mid-90s.
