Praying to the angel of the east that your source is wrong. I can't believe we'd keep Bonner over this guy. He seems like just the kind of flexible player we'd want vs. the Warriors.
A very reliable source has told me the Spurs have released him, I hope he's wrong because Butler has put in some good work for the Spurs this season. Again the Spurs better have changed their mind but he hasn't been wrong ever since we first spoke in 2011

I'm totally confused. Signing a 90 year old pt guard, and k mart, at this pt in the season means they are trying to do something now. So why in the would they keep Bonner?! Butler actually looked useful out there. Unreal.
Let's speculate on what kind of backroom deals Butler might get. As has been noted, cutting Butler is bad from the standpoint of aging vets who might want the ring. Butler will get his ring, but won't be with the team when it happens.
Butler is also a fringe guy, he's had to get training camp contracts to get onto teams. It's not a sure thing he can get another big contract next year. This would be a sucky way to be forced to retire.
Now to mitigate the sting that would occure to the spurs:
Promise him aa 2016 vet min position?
Promise him a scout position (the Matt Bonner seat warming position)?

Would be a mistake waiving him.

As reported, it's a sad day in Spurs history.
Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!
