Looking at Bonner through Pop's eyes: A guy who knows the system, is a great locker room guy and can coach the young guys, never complains about playing time, and can still fill-in with the starters (and be in the right spot) when needed, all on a minimal contract... That's a lot of pluses when the only real minus is one less roster spot.
This is probably the real truth. Teammates love him too, and despite sitting however many games is always in a good spirit and ready to play garbage time. Probably a great 14-15th man. He really could play in that capacity a few more years I guess.

The leg warmers this season are indicative of aging though. Has to have warmers for like 15-30 mins before playing. I hope Cady Lalanne can take his spot, but Pop will probably want the Red Rocket to train him.

Poor Danny. That game doesn't go to OT without Danny playing one his very best games, but Pop did not want to hear his explanation for that foul.
And that foul was a blessing for the Spurs, as they stole the inbound. It literally didn't make sense for Pop to NOT ask his team to pressure the ball in that situation.

You know you've got a successful franchise when people obsess over the last guy off the bench.... last year it was Ayres & Daye... They ain't talking about that in Philly, Lakerland, or the vast majority of other teams.

That roster spot could have let the Spurs keep a potential all star game changer

Spurs would keep Bonner over McCallum, tbh.

Bonner is on the team as a player for ONE reason. Minutes killer in blowouts and to teach Boban, David and LaMarcus the Spurs way of playing. He may not be your favorite player but he does know the system and will pass on the info to help them be better players.

I thought he might be making a Flashdance parody video.

I liked Bonner as an energy guy off the bench. He would come in and snag some much-needed rebounds, deliver some hard fouls, and light up the offense with those 3-pointers. I was never nearly as crazy about him as a starter, but I didn't hate him. But I couldn't deny that he faded in the playoffs. When your standard for success is the LOB, a guy who can't step up in the post-season isn't much use. I don't care what he does well, or used to do well - he's rarely been adequate at the most important time.

I guess I can understand keeping him around for an emergency, if someone gets injured.

Quiet expansive for a assistant coach... if true.

IMO can't have anything to do with BB reasons, just impossible.

Seriously though, is there a better 14th man than Bonner? A vet, great teammate, knows everything about the Spurs, smart, willing to help his younger teammates, very likely on his way to a FO or a coaching job, and on top of that always ready to play for a few minutes without being lost on the court. For the min and in his current role as a 6th big he's absolutely perfect.

One thing about Bonner, even with his lack of big game success, he carries a reputation as a GREAT three point shooter. That reputation alone, even if he hasn't played much, makes defenses have to account for him.

I don't know man. Really don't see neither Duncan or Bonner yelling "Shut the UP" at a player like Pop does.

Same goes with Bud. I didn't think Bud had it in him as well. And that game against GSW (before they were this good), he was cussing guys out on the sideline. Parker even said at halftime he HAD NEVER SEEN Bud like that before. You are talking about Bud being Head asst. for over 10 years at the time and Parker never once saw him that way before. I can see Duncan doing it because remember he did it to Chris Paul one time. Told him to "Calm the down."

Not same scenario. That was player to player plus Tim and Chris are bros.

And wouldn't Tim treat his players the same as Paul. Dude, I have seen Duncan heated many times. He has it in him. Bonner, no. He would be more like a Walton type coach, smart but not overly assertive. But Tim is a type of guy to get in someone's face if the situation called for it.

I regret i never made this happen.
That being have model(s) dawn shirts with pics of Pop-n-Bon hugging it out in wedding attire. Behind the Spurs bench so Popped would have seen it. National media caught on (not the local Pop sucking media wussies). Thus a strategy change along with a deserving roster spot would have opened up to a truly deserving player and more Championships vs blown ops.

    Model(s) wanted for Spurs cause.
