He either personally wants MVP contention, or he and GSW staff know that a month without him is a month of slowly losing ground to the Spurs in the race for No. 1. From a completely objective standpoint it's rather remarkable that the Dubs started the season 24-0, have gone 9-2 since, and yet only lead the Spurs by a handful of games. I know they've played fewer games thus far and could theoretically be leading by 4 or 5 games, but even that isn't a huge margin with the Spurs starting to gel.
