The criminal element gives the city a bad name, but if you keep away from those certain parts of town, it's fine. That goes for many cities in the U.S. I've lived in New Orleans my entire life (except college). It's true that the people here are nice and hospitable. There's also always something fun to do here on a given night, which makes it such a tourist city. I've been to most major cities in the U.S. and most just feel so generic, with no culture or personality. New Orleans has a certain personality that makes it feel different. San Antonio is similar. As far as the political corruption, it is quite baffling.... hence the nickname "the city that care forgot".
