do a system restore first,
sometimes when your keyboard is going out it will do strange things when you type, Like when you hit the letter K the key board will open TAB or CTRL maybe F1 etc....
many folks find that out after they spent money on virus programs.
If you have your windows disc put it in and unplugg the pc then plugg it back in and down load windows again,, make sure when it reads save exzisting files you say yes,
Thanks Mouse! Did a system retore to last week instead of rebooting then reinstalling xp (xp in my pc is built in). I completely forgot about system restore.
I wish I could go back and restore parts of my life![]()
I wish I could go back and restore parts of Stanley.
DVD Championship 2005 on the way
If you don't have antivirus protection, get some now -- it doesn't have to cost anything.
Free resident scanners:
AVG (not recommended for 98 or ME)
AntiVir (recommended for Win98 and ME)
Free online scanners (work in IE only):
Trend Micro HouseCall
Panda ActiveScan
Spyware protection:
Microsoft AntiSpyware (the only free self-updating resident scanner I know of, registry change alerts, WinXP and 2k only, beta)
Ad-Aware (manual updates and scans for free version)
Spybot Search and Destroy (ditto, also has some spyware prevention, registry change alert option)
SpywareBlaster Simple, effective spyware prevention. Install, update and enable protection -- it does the rest without your even knowing it.
Use only one resident antivirus program, but run an online scanner every once in awhile too.
Use any and all of the spyware tools, just don't run them at the same time.

we have the Computer Associates anti-virus and it's the best one we've ever used.
doesn't screw with anything else, doesn;t interfere with other applications, - but it does it's job and does it's job well.
add that to ad-aware and we've never felt more protected.
True, if you're paying for it or have it available to you from your ISP, the Computer Associates program works great. Norton is a complete resource hog.
agreed. it pissed me off to no end.
the 1st year is free for the computer associates program.. we don;t have to pay till May. then it's $30. It'll be the 1st program I've ever had to pony up for -but I think we'll go ahead and do it.
Is this not good for XP? That's what I have.AntiVir (recommended for Win98 and ME)
It's fine for XP. I should have been more clear - I don't recommend AVG for ME or 98. The newer versions blue screen alot on those systems.
Oh, good!
I like how it always prompts you to download the updates. And best of all, it's FREE!
Free, AVG is teh way to go. I actuallly prefer it over Norton 2005.
Me too for home use.
We're currently testing the payable version to see if we're going to start recomending it to our clients.
Anybody has any experience with it?
Good call Slomo. I like it.
we need a forum where we can talk PC maint. and help others learn how to post pics, etc... a place where you can test your image, A place some where some of us can chill
I have the best anti virus in the world, it's called HD flush and I am going to flush mine now, see you guys in an hour.
I hope this place is rockin tonight, And I hope Slomo can show us some stuff he is working on.
AVG Home is what I have loaded on both of our computers. It runs great. I run that and Adaware.
Oh, and I use AceUtilities as well. That helps with complete installs and it helps you regulate the startup programs without using msconfig.
