They aren't doing that to win a ring. They are doing it to put asses in seats. Otherwise the NBA is the most losing proposition for any investment opportunity. 29 teams won't win a ring next year. Many of them can still turn a profit however.

It's a business that sells the illusion that winning a ring is their goal just as the WWE sells the championship belt. Their goal is to turn as much profit as possible for as long as possible, with the occasional foray into the red to keep fans thinking the franchise is serious about winning.
