It would be unheard of for them NOT to change the name. I can't think of another instance where a stadium name didn't change with the company.
I want to see a link confirming that the SBC Center specifically will change its name...

The BW article makes it pretty clear than SBC, unknown esp internationally, is replacing SBC with well-known, once-revered, once-dominant ATT. Why would they buy the SBC Center name not but not align it with their corporate acronym switch?

It's not like it's been under that name for decades, a sacred tradition being broken. It's only been used 3 seasons as SBC. This is the Sun Belt, everything's new, ephemeral, no traditions.

Why wouldn't they? A company isn't going to change its name but leave traces of their former moniker behind.
I know it's not a tradition...and I don't know why I'm mad...I'll get over it unless we start losing every year now.

I don't understand why a wildly successful company buys a failing one and takes their name. AT&T hasn't been a respected brand in a LONG time. To me, that would be like Starbucks buying Maxwell House and rebranding themsleves to that. Yeah it's an old name, an inferior old name.

SBC Center flows out well, but so does saying, "It's the Spurs vs Mavs at the A-T-T, coming up!"
In other words, I don't really care, as long as the Spurs play there it's going to be a hard building to win in.
I don't think all the name change will be taking its full effect until well into '06.
Well, SBCGirl who works for the SBC Center said it would happen within the next 6 months.
If they change their name I wonder if they're going to reroof that big old SBC they have on the top roof.

Exactly. It's not like its MCI going back to being Worldcom or someone buying the Enron name.
It's AT&T, all the name has done is stay quiet. Once SBC/AT&T starts up all the ads with the AT&T name, people will instantly recognize it and buy into it. As opposed to SBC entering a new market and having to “establish” their selves, the AT&T name doesn’t have to do that.
I know how you feel about names changing with mergers. In Arizona, we just had Bank One Ballpark renamed to Chase field, and we're about to get America West Arena renamed to US Airways arena. We've also got hockey and football stadiums here without names, so that will happen soon, I'd guess.
ARe there any arenas not named for a corporation out there?
