Kurt Warner on Russell Wilson: 'not a great all-around quarterback yet'

"I still think he's growing," Warner said. "He benefits from the fact that early in his career, great defense, great running game, great running back and he had to be kind of a complimentary player. You know, buy some time, make five, six, seven plays a game and you have chances to win championships.... I still think he has a way to go as a pocket passer, and by that I mean seeing coverages making decisions, understanding what he's seeing within the framework of a play and making those every down plays."

    5. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks

    Share

A game manager, huh? Thankfully some perceptions die of natural causes. Wilson emerged as a playmaking machine in the second half of last season, doing it all for a Seattle team that needed its quarterback to carry the load without a healthy Marshawn Lynch. Wilson proved that his arm is plenty capable of NFL elite status, and when you combine that with the threat he presents with his legs—on both scripted and improvisational plays—there are only so many ways to defend him. Just remember how Wilson saved the day in the playoffs on that bitterly cold day in Minnesota, when his knack for finding a way to execute even when things were breaking down all around him made the difference for the Seahawks.

"I still think he's got work to do inside the pocket, their scheme is very simple," Warner said. "I think there's more that he can do inside the pocket with his skill set, and he's just got to grow into being able to see that and trust that."

Patrick Daugherty of Rotoworld ranks every quarterback situation in the NFL. He has the Seahawks at No. 1: Russell Wilson was the No. 75 overall pick of the 2012 draft. Four years later, he's made 74 straight starts, and is coming off a stratospheric 2015 that cemented his standing amongst the elite of the elite.

Russell Wilson is a game manager. If a team has a great defense, Wilson can hand off, limit turnovers, move the chains and do all the little, if unremarkable, things that need to be done to help his team to victory. That's a game manager.

    Number 4 ranked
2015 regular season statistics: 68.1 completion percentage, 4,024 passing yards, 34 touchdown passes, eight interceptions, 110.1 quarterback rating, 103 rushing attempts, 553 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, seven fumbles in 16 games
If there was an award for second-half MVP, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson would be the most worthy recipient. No. 3 posted a ridiculous 25:2 touchdown-to-interception ratio over the final eight contests, a stretch where he led Seattle to a 6-2 record. Of those final eight games, Wilson had six performances where his quarterback rating was over 100.

Russell Wilson is just a game manager for the Seahawks

To compare Wilson with an elite player is like comparing a Volvo with a Ferrari. There is no comparison.

It's definitely not elite statistics, with Wilson always needing help from his defense and running game to win games, plus the QB doesn't regularly turn the ball over.

Game managers at the QB position usually need to make 20 great plays a game, but elite sign-callers need to make almost 40 a game.

    That's the difference.

NFL: Why the Andrew Luck-Russell Wilson debate is laughable

On a Seahawks team that features arguably the best defense since the '85 Chicago Bears and arguably the NFL's most feared running back, Wilson plays the role of an overqualified game manager... Luck shoulders far more responsibility than Wilson does.

When considering the totality of Russell Wilson's accomplishments, they truly are amazing. True, there are some QB's with more yards, or more TD's, etc., but Wilson is ranked in the top 5 or top 10 of a wide variety of stats over his first three years. One could easily say that overall, Wilson has had the best first three years of any QB in NFL history. Here are a few of his accomplishments:

    - Wilson is the first QB in NFL history with a passer rating of over 95.0 in each of his first three seasons.
    - Wilson has 24 games with a passer rating of 100+ in his first three seasons...more than any other QB in NFL history. Flacco, Marino, and Palmer are tied for second with 19.
    - Wilson leads all QB’s in the NFL over the last 3 years with 10- 4th quarter comebacks and 15- game-winning drives. No other QB in NFL history has ever done this in their first 3 years.
    - He is one of only five players with at least 20 touchdown passes in each of first three seasons.
    - Wilson is the first and only QB in the Super Bowl era to have average yards per attempt of 7.6 or better in each of his first three seasons.
    - Wilson’s career yards per passing attempt of 7.9 is fourth-best of all QB’s since 1951.
    - Wilson is ranked #1 in career postseason yards per attempt. His career average of 9.01 (min. 200 pass attempts) is the highest in NFL history.
    - Wilson is the only QB in NFL history to appear in two SB's in his first three seasons.
    - Wilson holds the record for most passing yards in a playoff game by a rookie QB with 385 yards. The old record was set in 1937 by Sammy Baugh with 335 yards...that record stood for 75 years.
    - Wilson is ranked at #2 in all-time career passer rating (min. 1200 attempts) with a 98.6. Only Aaron Rodgers has a higher career passer rating.
    - Wilson's passer rating of 98.6 for a player’s first 3 years is the best in NFL history.
    - Including postseason, Wilson's passer rating of 98.5 for a player's first three years is the best in NFL history.
    - Wilson's postseason passer rating of 97.8 in his first three years is the best in NFL history.
    - Wilson’s career postseason passer rating of 97.8 (min. 200 attempts) is the 5th best in NFL history.
    - Wilson's TD% of 5.8% in his first three years is the 2nd highest in NFL history; only Dan Marino is higher with 6.9%.
    - Wilson's INT% of 2.1% in his first three years is the lowest of any QB in NFL history.
    - Wilson is ranked #2 all-time with a career TD to INT ratio of 2.77 (min. 1200 attempts) behind only Rodgers.
    - Wilson is ranked #3 all-time with a career INT rate of only 2.1%, behind only Rodgers and Brady.
    - Wilson is the first and only QB in NFL history to throw for 300+ yards and run for 100+ yards (313 & 106) in the same game...against the Rams on 10-19-14.
    - Only one QB in NFL history had more than one season with more than 20 TD passes and 10 or fewer interceptions in his first three seasons: Wilson, who has had three such seasons.
    - His 72 touchdowns are the seventh-most ever through a player’s first three seasons.
    - Including the postseason, Wilson has 84 passing TD's in his first three seasons, 4th-most in NFL history.
    - Including the postseason, Wilson has 97 passing and rushing TD's in his first three seasons, 3rd-most in NFL history.
    - Wilson is ranked #12 all-time for most passing yards by a QB in his first three years with 9950 yards.
    - Including the postseason, Wilson is ranked #5 all-time for passing yards by a QB in his first three years with 11770 yards.
    - Wilson is ranked #5 all-time for most total yards (passing + rushing) by a QB in his first three years with 11827 yards.
    - Including the postseason, Wilson is ranked #2 all-time for most total yards (passing and rushing) by a QB in his first three years with 13902 yards.

    - Wilson has the 6th highest career completion % in SB history with 65.22%.
    - Wilson has the 4th highest yards per attempt in a SB game with 11.76 yards in SB49.
    - Wilson's 1,877 rushing yards is second-most by a QB in the modern era through three seasons behind Cam Newton's 2,032 yards.
    - Including the postseason, Wilson has the most rushing yards for a QB in NFL history in his first three seasons with 2132 yards.
    - Wilson led all NFL rushers in 2014 with an average of 7.2 yards per carry.
    - Wilson has a record of having had a lead at some point in 56 straight games since 2012...the old record was 45 games...Also, in those 56 games, Wilson has never lost an NFL game by more than 9 points.
    - Wilson has won 36 games in his first 3 seasons; three more than any other QB in NFL history.
    - Including the postseason, Wilson has won 42 games in his first three seasons; 6 more than any other QB in NFL history.

How many times do we read...in NFL history...there?

How could anyone with even half a brain not get all that?

Wilson is probably a fringe top 10 QB

Seattle isn't really stacked anymore, IMO.. their 2013 and 2014 teams were stacked, but not the last 2 seasons.

the 2014 team was lucky to even be in the superbowl after that fluke comeback v green Bay.

Only some total moron who don't know about the game like this punk Clipper Nation wouldn't get this. And if the little jerk thinks he can post more negative about the great Russell Wilson than I can positive he's wrong as usual. How could anyone not see the greatness of Russell Wilson?

His five seasons are the best we have seen by a QB in NFL history.

Russell Wilson vs. Historical Young Quarterbacks

So the Super Bowl-winning Russell Wilson is the best young quarterback since 2000. Surprised? Oh, it gets better.
In this section, I’ll be looking at every other quarterback that was part of the original 87 (should I capitalize “original”, like it’s a thing?). But unlike the previous sections, I won't be really looking at specific quarterbacks - unfortunately, our Net Expected Points data doesn’t go back to 1925. Instead, I'll look at some traditional metrics, and show you where Wilson's ranked in relation to history.
Before we begin, I think this is a good opportunity to explain one of the main reasons we use Net Expected Points to judge how good or bad a player performs. It's because it captures more of the story. If Quarterback A throws for 200 yards, and Quarterback B throws for 250, should we assume Quarterback B had a better game? What if Quarterback B threw two more interceptions than Quarterback A? What if those interceptions happened in the red zone? What happens if all 250 of those yards came on first and second down, and Quarterback B completed just one of eight passes on third down?
Net Expected Points summarizes each of those individual instances into one nice, clear understandable number. That's why it's so awesome.
Without NEP, truthfully, we’re not as accurate. But there are some things we can still take away from traditional numbers that help prove that Russell Wilson is, indeed, the best young quarterback ever.
Of the 87 passers listed, Russell Wilson’s completion percentage is third best (better than any young quarterback prior to 2000). Wilson's quarterback rating (eww) is the absolute best, even better than Dan Marino’s first three NFL seasons. His touchdown to interception ratio? For Wilson, that's been greater than 2.7 over the first two years of his career. No other young quarterback’s was over 2.25.
How about one of the most widely accepted football statistics, average yards per attempt? Yup, you guessed it – Russell Wilson ranks higher than everyone on the list aside from Otto Graham and Ben Roethlisberger. And when that number is adjusted, he jumps ahead of Big Ben.
With almost any sort of efficiency metric, Russell Wilson is the best.
But just like a lot of what I’ve written about here, a main argument against Wilson is the fact that he plays in an NFL where quarterback passing is more efficient, and that it is easier to be better. Perhaps that’s where Dan Marino’s name pops up as the best youngster to ever toss the pigskin. After all, it's difficult to argue against a sop re quarterback who threw for over 5,000 yards in an NFL that wasn't so accepting of long balls and pass-first mentalities.
I'm cool with that. If you want Dan Marino to be better, that's fine. At the very least though, I think it’s time we recognize Russell Wilson not just as a game manager, or someone who was in the right place at the right time. We have to look at Wilson as opportunistic – a quarterback who does what he’s asked to do when called upon. Really, are we sure his numbers would suffer if he were to see more opportunity? Are we certain that Russell Wilson is just a product of good coaching, a good defense and smart play calling? Of course that all plays a role, but let's not make it seem as though Wilson's done little.
    Wilson's done everything right.

How much somebody have to see? NO NO NO he's not on a par with a Brady, Rodgers or Big Ben, but he is the BEST five year QB ever...OK ????????? And he will get better s they all do.
