People take Timmy for granted because he was substance over style. That said, Manu had substance and style. But not as much substance as Tim.
Ginobili is more likeable to the masses, especially latinos, etc. Popularity is pretty much synonymous with likeability and is not directly tied to or correlated to talent or performance.
Tim has been considered and labeled by the media as a whoe as boring. No one could ever spin or sell the bs story that manu is boring. He is the polar opposite.

IMO it was because of his chaotic style and the exciting plays he made. But make no mistake, Tim killed his opponents methodically with fundamental moves. That was pretty damn entertaining too.
he is too old for that tbh

he personifies basketball, it's that simple. He did the type of stuff everyone dreams of doing.
This about sums it up. Any time Manu was on the floor, there was a good chance you were going to see something spectacular. He might have a bad turnover game but there was probably a couple of impossible assists mixed in. And nothing was more exciting than seeing him take it in the lane and dunk over some bigs. It seemed like more times than not, it was in a critical moment in a close game.
Timmy pretty much just went to work every game. Usually nothing spectacular but just consistently dominant. Although I think people underestimate how out of the ordinary some of his moves were. The drop step, the spin, the bank shot. He did things better than most bigs ever. It just doesn't translate to a great highlight reel.
Manu then = exciting
Manu now = dog that won't stop peeing inside
People love Brazilians.
Como que why?
AKA dunking on big size s.
manus game is more relatable than tim game. He is a guard. Plus he has the connection of representing latin america
I don't think Manu is popular just because he is latino. He's popular because he is a winner. He's the one who led a bunch of nobodys from a country without any tradition in basketball to an olympic gold medal. Manu is well known for being a cool person too. Mostly latinos don't like other latinos. Mexicans don't like puertorricans, brazilians and argentinians have some rivalry from soccer. bolivians and paraguayians hate brazilians, chileans hate argentinians. The 'latin' thing sounds more like a Simon Bolivar's dream or a Fidel Castro's speech.
June 2013. Yes Manu was more popular than Timmy in Miami
Because Manu cold took him to the store
and stole his gold in 2004
There's also an slight generational gap. The 20 somethings are likely to forget the time before the ascendance of Manu, and the time when the big three wasn't quiet the big three yet. , Tony didn't really come into his own until 2006-07.
Those 98-2004 Tim years when he was going head to head with Shaq were amazing. After years of heartbreak, it was also sweet revenge to see someone take it to Malone so effortlessly, and then ring when the mailman couldn't.
Manu is only mentioned now that kobe is toxic. Gino never came close to mvp in large part because kobe was the bigger star. If kobe had retired sooner he'd be mentioned instead.
People don't emulate Duncan's game bc they aint got the body.
People love to watch car crashes
Manu was never even top 10 MVP candidate in any of his years
6th man maybe a couple years. Never mvp
Manu is popular with the fans because he will always stop and talk to them, give them autographs, etc. He is accessible and friendly and also exciting to watch. Duncan is/was very reserved and not as interested in interacting with the fans. For a comparison, just watch any video after a game, when the team travels, etc.. Also, Manu is always respectful to the press and will talk to them as long as they want him to.
My fav always was Manu but if you hat put a gun to my head, I would have chosen Timmy, as every Spurs fan should. Kids are frontrunners but not me. It doesn't take anything away from the love I have for Tim.
People can relate better to Manu than a big. It was the same with Shaq/Kobe. Kids usually don't buy jerseys of bigs. They rather buy guard/wing jerseys and do their moves on the court.
Nah, Tim had more recognition even among casual fans. I ran into lots of Duncan wannabes in street ball.
