He used to cut or trade people if they didn't perform in the playoffs. He'd usually give them 2 chances, if they failed on the second one, they'd be gone. He used to demand physicality and tough defense. He never used to rest players. He would play a rookie or a young player over a veteran if that player was a better player. He used to do everything right, and I still use a lot of the principals he taught back then to this day myself. I don't like a lot of his new philosophies at all (the resting, the lack of adjustments, not playing rookies).

He did some really good things from 2012 to 2014, but apart from those few years, I don't like a lot of what he's done after the 2006 season.
He got soft. Not the same guy who fired Hill and took over. That's what 5 championships do. Plus you can't win every year according to him.

Obviously if the Spurs don't win, it's because the players didn't execute Pop's brilliant plan as designed.
    Hence the "play better" mantra.

He won't retire because that would cost him coaching the national team at the next Olympics.
I can definitely see a repeate of 2004 in the olympics from what Larry Brown did with overcoaching. I can see the US jumping out to a big lead and popovich resting the hot guys for the medal ceremony only to lose on a comeback(if they even make it to the medal game).

For all Pop's flaws he is still better than 90% of NBA coaches tbh...

I think Pop will retire this offseason, TBH. He clearly lost all the fire and his ability to adjust.
He also won't be able to coach USA Basketball in FIBA during the qualifying rounds because he will be coaching in the NBA. He could very well retire. He won't, because he's still making the playoffs, but he should retire soon. He looks like all broke lose on his nose.

Comparing Pop to Belichick isn't fair tbh....football players are much more interchangable.
