My impression is the Spurs were hesitant to extend the Supermax because of Kawhi's recent behavior and because of questions about his health. They wanted constructive meetings to be assure KL was healthy and committed to the Spurs before offering a lot of money for a team with relatively poor ownership.

Kawhi and/or his people took offense to the idea that he'd have to make his case, and felt the Spurs should just arrive with the offer in hand. Much the way a suitor of LeBron wouldn't have asked James to convince the team he was worth it. That perceived lack of respect in the Leonard camp lead to the "last straw" and the trade request. Whether the offense was genuine or it was all gamesmanship to get the Supermax, or get to LA, I don't know.

It is a bit ludicrous to sit out a year with an injury and then be offended if your employer wants to have a sit down with you before doubling your salary, and sucking up 1/3 of the payroll budget for the next 5 years.

Yes, I bet it's a little more complicated than that, but that's the gist. I bet Spurs want Kawhi to reign in some of his uncle's ridiculous behavior and get another person in control of his career that has a track record for keeping his players functional and I'll bet Kawhi and his uncle still have distrust for the organization because they want to break the family control of Kawhi. I'm sure there is something to Kawhi thinking the Spurs doctors messed up are wrong even though it appears he had to go shopping for a doctor that would tell him what he wants to hear.

Yes, the Spurs may have been completely idiotic with their money when it came to TOSB's and shooters that can't shoot, but when it was time to pay the guy that carries the team.... THAT is when they drew the line.

Because they don’t want him anymore and they can get an insane package for him at that point? If he signs, they can’t trade him for one year. Him helping his value would be massive.
So you are recommending they offer it now, especially if they are planning to trade him next season.

if he signs and establishes he's a top 3 player again, at that point why would the spurs trade him
Because once someone pushes you, they're likely to do it again. Things may be calm, maybe even for a couple of years, but the first time, the storm was out of the blue after he had signed a MAX contract, and it will appear so the second time, if the Spurs are stupid enough to trust The Group going forward. You re-establish him, and then you take the big haul that other teams will undoubtedly offer for him at that point.

If Timmy Legend doesn't win us a bunch of championships nobody knows who this loser 'Iceman' is, and instead we'll be reminiscing of such Seattle legends as Gary Payton and Detlef Schrempf, tbh...

Neh. If they're winning with Kawhi after signing a super max, they're keeping him.

Everything about the way he acted last season indicates he planned to leave since at least the all star break.

I'm not worried about Kawhi going broke because of personal spending habits

That article reminds of what I thought Kawhi was all about. He probably still is that guy...just getting really bad advice.
