Bert has the physical tools to be a decent defender inToday's NBA
. He is tall, long, and young enough to run around a bit. He's no Andre Roberson out there, but when he has confidence, he can be a decent defender given his physical tools. I just wish they would coach him up a bit more on that end, because they seem to be giving him the Bonner treatment (just put your arms up on defense, try not to foul, don't be aggressive, and play your role which is shooting 3s).
edit: Bert also has good shot blocking instincts. Again, if the FO would invest in coaching him a bit more, he has a lot of potential to be a nasty player.
I think perception plays a big role here. Without Kawhi, Pop has reverted to his earlier principle of having a Centerpiece (the major role of a primary wing defender). Since this roster lacks a true SF, Cunningham is what he's got to work with given that strategy. But yes, I'm also pleasantly surprised with his touch from 3. He seems to have practiced corner 3's a bit because he is firing away from there and hitting them.
