It was an official NBA trip on behalf of NBA China, and also supported by Jordan Brands. Other players had done it before Kawhi. The NBA is looking to increase interest in China, and Jordan Brands is looking to sell shoes, of course. The Spurs knew all about that China trip, btw.

I'm not sure why this is considered news or controversial.
This is basically the way that meeting was reported at the time and it seems almost obvious.
Pop went into the meeting with one goal in mind -- wanting to hear it from "the horse's mouth." Pop wanted to make Kawhi tell him to his face.
Pop thought Kawhi might not be able to do it (even with Uncle Dennis next to him). Even Pop probably thought it was a long shot -- but at least Pop would get the satisfaction of making him do it.
Uncle Dennis must have suspected Pop's approach and likely told Kawhi to practice in front of a mirror what he would say to Pop before Pop said anything.
Dennis knew that if Pop was allowed to start the meeting with his spiel, Kawhi's statement would be harder and harder to execute (much less to calculate the "right" moment).
So Kawhi did what he needed to do under the cir stances.
Pop had a "Hail Mary" chance and like most Hail Marys it didn't work out.

My conclusion Leonard was bored in SA and just wanted to leave and acted unprofessionally to fastrack his departure. Everything else is just noise. Michael Wright’s article in ESPN and Stephen A. Smith echoed the same sentiment. I expect him with the Clippers next season.
