Defense will improve. So will turnovers, field goal percentage, etc. Don't worry so much, one day around the All-Star game they'll get into a groove. When that happens, nobody will have a prayer.
Scoring more points in and of itself does not mean giving up more points. What you say is only true if a team speeds up the pace of the game. If a team scores more simply because it is playing at a quicker pace, that doesn't mean the offense has improved at all.
And an examination of points per 100 possessions, for and against, is more reliable than an examination of shooting percentages.
So far, the Spurs are averaging 92 possessions per game, as opposed to 89 last year. They are scoring 106 points/100 possessions, as opposed to 108 last year.
And last year's stats are dragged down because Duncan was first slowed, and then knocked out of the lineup, by injuries. Last year, before Duncan sprained his ankle in LA in Game #48, the Spurs were scoring 98 a game and giving up 86, on pace to be one of the most dominant teams ever. This year, they're scoring 98 and giving up 91. Again, it's early, but clearly, they're not fully up to speed yet.
But one should not expect them to be. It's only November 8.
When the Spurs are fully on track, I expect they will have a point differential above +12. Right now it's +6.7.
Defense will improve. So will turnovers, field goal percentage, etc. Don't worry so much, one day around the All-Star game they'll get into a groove. When that happens, nobody will have a prayer.
So you're saying that the Spurs aren't going to win 72 games this year?
Damn, fairweather fan.

Through 4 games the Spurs are averaging 22.8 assists per game. Last season they averaged 21.6 which was 14th in the league. If they had averaged 22.8 per that would've put them at 6th.
My memory is hazy but I believe that the Spurs led the league in assist differential per game last season.
In re defense, the Spurs have given up 18.3 assists per game through 4 contests this season. Last season they gave up a league leading 16.9 per game. Oddly enough, 18.3 per would have also been good enough for 1st in the league.
So, hopefully the Spurs will see their assist per game average at least stay where it's at if not increase while they see their opponents' average decrease as the defense becomes more crisp.
I'd say around 60 to 65.
The Spurs play thus far projects out to a 55-27 record.
Clearly they are better than that.
60 or 65 my ass.
I say the Spurs kick some butt and go undefeated!!!

I only care about the regular season record in regards to playoff positioning.
woohoo!! death to infidels!!!
I've only caught one Spurs game (last night), but I'm guessing teams are all bringing their "hey, let's beat the champs!" game, too. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown, right?
Perhaps, but I think 'Lakers night', 'Heat night' or 'Cavs night' really has more pull for the average team and its home crowd.
