If I understand the CBA rules correctly, they're also in a tricky position where Dejounte Murray is unlikely to accept a contract extension. By rule, the first year can only be a 40% increase from the last year of the current contract, with 8% annual increases allowed thereafter. It's not well below his market value, but enough that he'll wait until he becomes an unrestricted free agent. This also will lower his value in trades if Atlanta is afraid he won't resign. This is similar to the situation we had with Jakob Poeltl this year.

I hope he leaves and puts Atlanta in a tough position right before they owe us those picks. I wouldn't even be opposed to the Spurs being the ones to sign him away.

The next big one is supposedly Cameron Boozer. I believe he will be in the draft the year we have the pick swap with Atlanta.
Correct. Bryce James and Oscar Wembanyama will also be in that class.

I read in a couple of places a while back that OKC is trying to put together a package for Lil El DeBarge.

We could have up to 3 of their first round picks in the coming years. The hawks being good or bad directly impacts the spurs

ATL in a weird spot. They have a franchise player in Trae, but he’s not good enough to lead them to the promised land as #1 option. I don’t see them trading him anytime soon.

I think they still make the playoffs again next season for sure. But once they inevitably lose in the first or second round, they might want to change things up.

Trae Young just signed his extension last year so he’s there for the long haul. Dejounte is an UFA next Summer though. I assume they’re going to want to re-sign him, but the pairing with Trae last year didn’t work as well as ATL had hoped it would. Trae is so ball-dominant that it left Dejounte standing around watching a lot. He still had a solid season at 20 PPG on 46% shooting, but his assists, rebounds, and steals were all down considerably from his last season in San Antonio. Will be interesting to see what they do there, but all signs point to ATL re-signing him. They won’t just let him walk for nothing.

Bogdan Bogdanovic is expected to decline his Player Option and become a Free Agent. He’ll be highly coveted as he’s proven himself to be a reliable shooter. That would be a huge loss for them.

Clint Capela is also a Free Agent this Summer I believe. He’s far from a great player, but losing him would also really affect their defense. I think they re-sign him.

Jonn Collins has 2 years left on his deal but the second year is a Player Option… that’s where things get murky. Something tells me he wants out of ATL, and he’ll have plenty of suitors on the open market. He’ll be 27 and entering his prime most likely. I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded him next year before the deadline. He’s the guy to keep an eye on.

They still have some young talented role players in DeAndre Hunter, AJ Griffin, and Saddiq Bay. Will be interesting to see how they develop.
I think it worked well. Murray had a good year. They didn't get enough help on the front line. They need to add more talent at the 4 and 5. Can't go far in the NBA with not much at the 4 and 5.

Atlanta is poorly run. That Murray trade was a bad one for them. They gave up too much for him.

He wasn't going to make them all that much better without upgrades on the frontline.

They could flip Trae or DM for unprotected picks & players and become a lottery team. It can happen

Rumours are going on about lakers trying to acquire Trae young. But you know how the rumours are for the lakers, they are always ridiculously beneficial to them because they are written up by legions of laker fanboi writers.

Youngs elimination comments to the effect the Hawks ran into some juggernaut in Boston.....

    certainly rings hollow now.

Fans don't make the calls. They're a disfonctional, play in team who lost 3 more games than last year with Murray and with no leeway to improve... They're right there on the treadmill. Better act quickly when their assets still have value than when they'll have no choice and everyone will low ball them... I give them maybe one more year, or half one, to see if they're going anywhere with that configuration before taking radical decisions, which I believe they will.

They're certainly not going to become a legit contender, so those picks are in mid teens, worst case scenario.

They also won't tank because obviously they don't own their picks, so I think it's pretty much set. Hopefully we get a top10 pick or two. Really dumb trade by them.

They need to move Trae Young, maybe target a KAT or similar. There's no balance and the team is capped out in mediocrity.

Yeah, they have nothing to offer. I think their only clear FRP is 2029. New Orleans has the option to take either their 2024 or 2025 FRP. That ties up 2023 and 2026 as adjacent years. 2027 went to Utah with RW, and 2028 is locked out by being an adjacent year.

the thing is, they have no incentive to intentionally bottom out. so the odds of them trading Trae, letting Murray go, etc, is next to nothing
Trae Young is overrated AF and he's nerfed now because his greatest skillset was chucking his body into the defender and getting three free throws for it.

Murray was never that great especially for today's style of basketball, is injury prone, and has a limited skillset, poor shooting at a position that in today's NBA requires shooting, that type of skillset for a point guard would have been solid in the 1990s but he's not a perennial all star type in today's NBA.

They don't have much of a team around them and it's not like they are some kind of dynastic dynamic duo to begin with. They're one injury away from being bottom feeders, IMO.

Do Hawks (or Falcons) fans actually exist, though? I feel like ATL is Dallas junior in that it's a southern bandwagon city with a bunch of fans of other teams but lukewarm support for the local teams. Except Dallas has an advantage in that it's more established and its franchises are run by rich owners and there's an aura of legacy with the DFW based franchises, especially the Cowboys. Not the case in Atlanta.

The only reason the Braves have all the fans they do is that there really isn't another team in the area, compared to other sports. No baseball in the Carolinas, Tennessee, New Orleans, or the rest of the deep south until you get all the way to South Florida. So not really much options for anyone in the confederate states outside of TX/FL, except to root for the Braves.

no, he is not a good player especially on a team. He has ok individual stats but people look at his scoring and ast and think he is good. He is not. DJm is a better all around player.

rather trade those drafts picks to move up now instead of trading for him.

Trae is actually one of the better pick and roll passers in the league. his lob game is amazing. could only wonder what it looks like with Wemby. he hasnt been efficient despite having decent players around him, though he is also a relatively clutch scorer.

but no, i dont enjoy the ball dominant/no defense nature of his game. add on the massive salary and the cost of acquisition... no shot its worth

He's a ballhog, a gambler, a diva, and a sieve for the most part on defense.

Think Chris Jackson / Mahmoud Abdur-Rauf from the 90s. Or a less fun Gilbert Arenas from the '00s.

It would be great if the Hawks bottomed out in 2025-2027, but since they don't own their own picks they are unlikely to tank on purpose and probably won't be terrible absent a slew of injuries.

Still, if the Hawks finish with a bottom 7 or 8 record a couple of times, the Spurs will get a good chance to get one jump into the top 4.
