I would guess the earliest they would know is 1 hour before the game, after he has warmed up and tested it. One of the problems with ankle sprains is the ankle tends to stiffen up, if, once you get warmed up you don't stay active. Often you will see players who may have twisted their ankle continue to play big minutes, rather than sitting out during a game.
