    What ever punishment they get wont be enough for what they have put the
    kids through. I often wonder why we (society) care so much for the sickos of
    this world. A mentally ill person can murder someone, do all sorts of vile deeds
    and society is quick to say they shouldn't be punished.
    I don't think anyone is arguing that these people shouldn't be removed from society. I think the argument is that there is no reason to punish someone who does not understand the moral value of their actions. What good does the punishment serve in cases such as those?

    But aren't they a menace to society and all they come into contact with?
    Haven't they proven they will kill, main or whatever.

    Hasn't society already said that sexual offenders are a menace to society
    and after serving their time will forever be watched? Is a sex offender a
    person with a mental problem? Do they really know what they are doing?
    Yet, a person with restricted mental capacity (re ed) is said to not be
    aware or responsible for their actions.

    If they are a threat to society, the court will usually have them placed in a supervised care facility, thus removing them from contact witht the general public.

    I guess you could argue that most people that commit heinous crimes have some sort of mental problem. However, as I stated, if the mental infirmity is so severe that the defendant cannot and did not appreciate the moral value of his actions, punishment is not appropriate.

    There are "deviant", criminal, immoral behaviors that are so universal across cultures and times that they must have some genetic component. sexuality/lesbianism, wife beating, pedophilia, racism, promiscuity, alcoholism/substane abuse, fear of serpents and insects, etc, are not simply and only nurtured/acquired behaviors but must have, imo, some nature/genetic/selected component.

    What justification is there for punishing someone who is driven/influenced by genetic factors rather than by free will and moral choice?

    Well, I think you can have a genetic predispostion for certain activities and still have free will and moral choice.

    For example, a person may have a genetic predisposition to hold objects with their left hand. This doesn't mean that they can't choose to hold objects using their right hand.

    You can also have moral choice. I think science has shown that males have an innate biological drive to "spread the seed," but this does not mean that we can't make a moral choice to remain faithful to our significant others.

    That bull you 2 are spewing is laughable.

    You download child porn, you goto jail. You molest a child, you goto prison for life. you molest multiple children to entertain other sicko s with the same 'genetic predisposition', you get killed.

    This isnt even debateable. I could care less what flimsy excuse some over-educated pseudo-science major can come up with.

    gun = $399
    bullet = $0.22
    Putting the business end point blank to a child molester's head and gleefully squeezing the trigger = priceless.

    Next time, actually read the posts before commenting. The discussion I was having has nothing to with the child pornography ring. Xray was asking about punishing the mentally ill and I was responding to his post.

    Well, I think it is obvious that we, as a society, place more value on the lives of humans than we do animals.
    I wonder if we do. Abortion and euthanasia are condoned and tolerated and
    fought for by the same people who normally defend the mentally ill.
    It is a paradox.

    On sexual predators, they really are the s of earth, who prey on the
    young. And leave scars that may never heal. They truly do take the
    innocence away from the innocent.

    adding that one case involved the abuse of a toddler less than 18 month old.
    as punishment i would suggest being tied down to a pice of plywood with wet leather straps, have thier bellies slowly torn open with blunt knives and/or spoons and then being abandoned liek that in the mojave hooked to an IV.
