I love Elton Brand, but how can you be an All Star and also be underrated? In the immortal words of Robot from Lost in Space, "That does not compute".
well its always good when a spur is getting recognition
I love Elton Brand, but how can you be an All Star and also be underrated? In the immortal words of Robot from Lost in Space, "That does not compute".
The Yao-is-overated card has been played so many times that he is now seriously underrated. He was over-hyped when he first came into the league, but his limitations has always been prominently displayed. He can't avoid fouls, he has limited lateral quickness, and he's stamina is terrible, but he is also an amazingly accurate shooter from 15 in, good passer for his size, have good post moves, and knows the game very well.
And yet people are saying that he doesn't deserve to be an all-star this year despite the fact that he was averaging close to 20/10 earlier in the year, saying that he is a bust despite yearly improvements and solid numbers across the board. The last 14 games, in which he has dominated the opposition, and not coincidentally after his toe surgery, people are starting to pick on his stamina and the Rockets record.
The man is not perfect, he is rated as the 2nd best center in the league, behind a washed up Shaq. But when people bring up Yao's durability, they never bring up Shaq's inability to play full seasons during his years of domination. I say double-standards.
Leave it to Peter to bring sunshine to the thread.Nazr has stone hands and limited athleticism, yet still manages to make Rasho look like dog . It's a dream but perhaps this summer they can dispose of Nesterovic and somehow upgrade at center. But my $ is on the Spurs losing Mohammed in free agency and starting Rasho next season
Lets say they find a sucker errrrrr taker to take Nesterovic.
Who is an unpgrade, that is a FA, that they could get?
IMO, tongiht a guy that flashed in my mind that would work, in a sign n trade, and thats saying he gets the same amount, and that the team wants him, is Troy Murphy from Golden State.
Plays good D, is tough inside, has a nice jumper, 3 point range, rebounds well, can even block shots.
No one is going to take Rasho. Maybe Philly if they get rid of Dalembert or something like that.
Provided we can keep Nazr or some reasonable facsimile, we'll be wishing we kept Rasho (or some reasonable facsimilie) when Yao dominates the league for the next decade or so.
And having a hard on for Murphy doesn't make him a shot blocker.
Javtokas vs. Rasho could be an interesting battle next season. If Javtokas ends up being the better player, that'll look Rasho's contract look that much worse.
Well that's what I'm on about. He's got an acute case of Malikitis -- he has real value to the team but is just making too much money. Trouble is it's very difficult to think of other centers who really fit the bill against Yao for the near future.
According to you, 7'6 guy equals tough at ude and dominant.
Let see, Manute Bol, Georghe Muresan, Shawn Bradley, what a great comparison they are to Yao, much more dominant and tougher, right ?![]()
What many people can't understand, the taller & bulkier you are, most of the time you'll end up having less athleticism and agility. And THOSE are a very important aspect too in Basketball beside pure height. That's why Shaq and Wilt are natural freaks, for their height and bulk, yet having unbelievable level of athleticism and agility compared to other people their size.
Yao is tall and quite bulky, he IS NOT very athletic and agile, though for guy his size, he's no slouch either. You question his toughness ? How about enduring pain in his toe for quite sometime in carrying his team for the past two seasons in the same manner of TD with his PF ? His dominant play ? Well, after the surgery, i dare you to name a better starting C compared to him, now he's playing painfree.
So, before making any misguided assumptions, can you please look deeper into the topic rather than being caught by the hype ? As Spurs fan, you should know better than that (the way TD and the Spurs are recognized by mainstream media and most NBA fans outside SA)![]()

A healthy Camby's -which makes him a strong defender- still NO WHERE near Yao's dominance and effectiveness at the offensive side of the game.
Nazr's agent just got a new bargaining chip.![]()
leave it to Tpark to blindly slurp Peter's regurgitated i hate rasho take
"That's what made me say it (that) Yao's going to have a big game," Smith said. "That's when Charles said if Yao Ming scores 19 points I'll kiss your ass. Lo and behold, in the same week, Yao has 20 points."
i remember in Yao's first or second year in the league, Charles Barkley said something like he'd eat his hat if Yao ever averaged 18pts a game.
Wish someone could find that footage and serve it up.
Supergirl, I agree ...
I don't think Yao Ming is underrated.
I don't think Elton Brand or Andrei Kirilenko are underrated either.
They've all been named to the all star team. They all get pub. Not sure that classifies as underrated.
If Duncan was only an all-star, and nothing else, that would be underrating him, wouldn't it?
Maybe I'll send sir Charles some plastic ware and salt & pepper. LOL
I'm sorry folks. The Spurs are just gonna have to exhaust all possibilities needed to keep Nazr on the roster. The outing versus Denver notwithstanding, his recent surge has further convinced me of that.
Rasho simply does not provide the consistent rebounding and scoring the Nazr does. We cannot get by with just him at center next season.
If they win the le again this year, Nazr's agent will have yet another bargaining chip.
Not going to happen. The Luxury tax effectively DOUBLES anything he makes. If you think the Spurs are going to bite off on that, you have no knowledge of the organization. He's just not good enough for an organization that has two centers and a PF in the pipe in Europe.
Rasho is clogging the pipe.
Just because he's on the roster doesn't mean he starts or plays the most minutes, as you're witnessing this year. Now if you had Rasho AND Nazr, our two half-centers, BOTH with big contracts, THAT would clog the pipe.
How are Yao and Terry underrated?
If anything they're overrated.
Nah, he's clogging it. The better center is likely out of SA due to Radosoft's contract.
I'll bet the Spurs were behind Nazr's inclusion in this list as part of their obvious strategy to devalue him and drive down his asking price this summer.
Don't people understand- Nazr is going to leave by HIS choice for an outrageous amount of money. No way the Spurs pay Nazr more than Manu- and that's what he thinks he can get. He will NOT take less money to stay here.
If he is surging so great why has Pop pulled him so many games lately for awful defense. See Houston- New Orleans- Lakers...
So I guess all of you would prefer to have Rasho as your one and only center for next year. C'mon folks don't devalue what Nazr has done this year.
