Tim Duncan, Spurs
Stud of the Night
by Marty Burns
Never underestimate the heart of a champion -- or a two-time MVP. Duncan had a season-high 36 points (on 13-of-19 shooting) to go with 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks as the host Spurs edged the Mavs in Game 5 to avoid elimination and pull within 3-2 in their Western Conference semifinal series. Setting the tone from the start, Duncan hit his first 12 shots to keep San Antonio in the game. He even got serious from the foul line, sinking 10-of-15 free throws. Tony Parker (27 points) and Manu Ginobili (18) came up big as well for the defending champs, but Duncan led the way

FINAL
In the seasons that the Spurs won championships, they were able to win close games by making stops down the stretch. The Spurs did it again Wednesday when they held the Dallas Mavericks scoreless over the final two minutes for a 98-97 victory in Game 5 at the AT&T Center.
The best-of-seven series returns to Dallas on Friday with the Mavs still leading 3-2.
Manu Ginobili made a free throw with 1:59 left to break a 98-98 tie and neither team scored again.
The Mavs had a final possession with 2.4 seconds left. Jason Terry's shot was off the mark and Dirk Nowitzki's tipin wouldn't fall.
The Spurs had key defensive plays at the end including Bruce Bowen's block of a Nowitzki shot with 6.3 seconds left that resulted in a jump ball.
Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 36 points and Tony Parker had 27. Nowitzki had 31 points for the Mavs.
The Spurs made 22 of 31 of their free-throw attempts. The Mavs were 16 of 19 from the free-throw line.
THIRD QUARTER
Parker took control at the offensive end and even turned a steal into an easy bucket to help the Spurs grab the momentum in the third quarter. Parker had 10 points in a 21-7 Spurs run that carried them to an 81-78 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Parker finished the quarter with 27 points. uncan led the Spurs with 31 points. Nowitzki had 24 points for the Mavs.
Through three quarters the Spurs were 16 of 24 from the free-throw line. The Mavs were 14 of 17 from the line.
SECOND QUARTER
Duncan was the most dominant player in the second quarter. Despite that, Dirk Nowitzki's breakaway basket at the buzzer gave the Mavs a 57-57 halftime tie.
Duncan made 11 of 11 from the field in the first half. He had 28 points in the half, 21 coming in the second quarter including their final 10 points of the first half.
Nowitzki led the Mavs with 18 points.
The Spurs made 10 of 17 free throws in the first half. The Mavericks made 8 of 9.
FIRST QUARTER
Tony Parker had 15 points and two assists in the first quarter to carry the Spurs to a 29-24 lead. Nowitzki had 12 points for the Mavericks. Nowitzki hit 6 of 7 from the field.
Bruce Bowen was the first Spur to get in foul trouble, picking up his second foul with 5:24 left in the first quarter.
PREGAME
Manu Ginobili returned to the Spurs' starting lineup for Game 5. Ginobili came off the bench in Game 4. Michael Finley started the second straight game for the Spurs in the front line next to Duncan.
Brent Barry, who started in Game 4 in Ginobili's usual spot, was coming off the bench again Wednesday.
That gave the Spurs a starting lineup of Parker, Ginobili, Bowen, Finley and Duncan.
For a Spurs home game, there seemed to be a lot of pro-Mavericks energy in the AT&T Center in the two hours leading up to Wednesday's Game 5.
While there were more fans arriving early with Spurs jerseys than Mavs jerseys, the Dallas fans clearly made up a significant portion of those cheering for players during the pregame shooting session. One fan was walking around with an old Mavericks Finley jersey with the words "HAS BEEN" on it.gutsy mavs fans doing it inside Spurs' arena?
Finley, in his first season as a Spur, heard boos in the Spurs' last two games in Dallas.
Ginobili looked very energetic while out on the court warming up. Parker, who is suffering from nagging leg and groin problems, was starting.

is this the right starting line-up for this team? That gave the Spurs a starting lineup of Parker, Ginobili, Bowen, Finley and Duncan
I was more pissed than worried about how things had been goning.
We're definitely getting the next two games. Dallas is gonig to get what's coming in Dallas!
The reason you're so confident is because
your team is the
NBA DEFENDING CHAMPION SAN ANTONIO SPURS

what are you laughing at? the spurs ARE the better team. Dallas is good, but San Antonio is a champion.
Damn Right!
Champions don't lay down.
Maybe Dallas it just a little bit worried.
We're comin' at you again. Full Tilt Boogie!
And another thing. A win sure keeps out dallas fans. AMEN!
Because we won by 1 point on our home court, thus we are clearly the superior team and small ball rules?
It's not even about being the superior team, its just about the Spurs taking whats thiers. They lost games 3 and 4, not the refs. we lost the ball out of bounds, we turnedover the ball when barry tried to bring it in. we need to execute bettter and play championship b-ball. luckily we live another day to where our championship experience can work to our advantage.
Why am I so confident?
Timothy Duncan
He will personally see to it that we will not lose!
GO FREAKING SPURS GO!
