Saw him 2 Summers ago at Cynthia Woods' Pavillion at The Woodlands with Thiin Lizzy and Deep Purple and came away very impressed, but he is not #1..no way.

You have to pay homage to:

    Also better than Satriani IMO:

Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray, Tony Iommi (BLACK SABBATH), Kirk Hammett(METALLICA), Angus & Malcolm Young (AC DC), Eddie Van Halen, Dimebag Darrell (PANTERA), Adam Jones (TOOL), Kerry King & Jeff Hanneman (SLAYER), Dave Murray (IRON MAIDEN) Jeff Beck, Brian May(Queen), and Ted Nuggent

Jazz: Stanley Jordan...if you're ever lucky enough to hear a clip, the guy innovated a way to play a 12 string and make it sound like he's playing 2 flippin guitars...it's awesome. You could SWEAR there are 2 guitars playing but it's just him. It's amazing.

Metal: I don't know...gotta be a tossup. Pure speed and awe? Prolly between Malmsteen, Van Halen, Vai. I don't know if anyone else, even Satriani comes close. Brilliance? Randy Rhodes, Dimebag, Ace Frehley, ZAK WYLDE!! Joe Perry,Tony Iommi, Kirk Hammet (Metallica) and you can't forget Carlos Cavazo from Quiet Riot (Battle Axe solo)-very good composers.

Classic Rock: DUH..Santana, Jimmy, Stevie Ray, Jimmy Page, Clapton, the list goes on and on.

The Rest: Jose Feliciano, Brian May (Queen), BB King...

Hendrix, Fampton, and yes even Vaughn never have come close to playing at shred speed with such fluidity like Satriani.

Okay so the word "Great" in the le was wrong, I meant mention a guitarist who can shred like Satch or better.

Vaughn and Hendrix never came close to matching his speed. Unless I haven't heard those songs, in which case, gimmie their names.

Steve Vai is the only guitarist I can think of that you can compare speeds with Satch, and Satch was his teacher as a kid..

Other guitarists you mentioned are bad ass, but page, frampton, everything pre 79 just doesn't even approach the speed Satch has played at, especially on his Surfing with The Alien LP.

    The ultimate shredder:

    Joe

    Satriani

Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen and the like may be great guitarists... but their music sounds like cats dying. When showing off ones talent takes precedance over making good music, you suck ass by proxy.

I disagree....the sheer talent is what turns me onto guys like vai, malmsteen and satch.

I watch the original link I posted from youtube.com and my mouth just drops wide open. I am so amazed that I love it. BTW, Satch did burn out, but his old --Surfing With The Alien, etc, it pretty much redefined the guitar at the time.

Plus, every er post 85 who's ever used the WHammy bar creatively or made his guitar "scream" pretty much ripped off Satch.

Dude check out the tracks "Stratus" and "Red Baron" on Billy Cobham's Spectrum recorded in 1973. Tommy Bolin tore it the up!

Smoking-cannon solo debut from the drummer of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The compositions are fast 'n' fierce fusion, more directly steeped in soul and the blues than the MO's. This means the harmonic vocabulary and general song structures are simpler, not as flamboyant or classical-sounding as Cobham's previous band. But Spectrum's pieces are by no means less fiery, and the virtuosic intricacies on this disc are sure to knock prog fans of that persuasion like bowling pins right into the gutter. Along for the ride here are: fellow disgruntled Mahavishnu departee Jan Hammer on keys; the late, cult-legend Tommy Bolin on guitars; and Lee Sklar (that's right, the same guy who would later show up on Phil Collins' wimpy 80s solo albums), flexing much more muscle on bass. Particularly noteworthy are the tracks "Quadrant 4," "Spectrum" (the bass riff of which was later sampled by Massive Attack for "Safe" from their album Blue Lines), and the laid-back "Red Baron." This stuff would probably have been earth-shaking with McLaughlin. Nonetheless, Bolin fills some big shoes without blinking an eye, inserting smoldering solos left and right. One downside to this album is that drum solos are inserted before each of the 'main' tracks, but thankfully these only each last about a minute or so. A great purchase for the Mahavishnu fan, just don't expect any Indian scales, Bartok harmonies, or anything like that.

but seriously, im glad cbf narrowed down hwat he meant as there really is no greatest guitar player ever
shredder, perhaps it is vai, perhaps satch, perhaps randy rhoads (that dude could shred) though i never really got into thewhole steva vai kinda sound

i think some of the people here got confused with favorite for best. i mean come on, cobain??? dave matthews??? neither one of them are even in my top 50 list of best guitarists. write good songs, yeah. have good bands, yeah. but not great guitarists

in no particular order i'd say the best/fav are clapton, hammet, the dude from in flames, zakk, randy rhodes, dimebag, vaughan, hendrix, mustaine, and bb king
im half drunk so im sure ive left a few out
and oh yeah the hanson kid is bad ass.

Satch taught Kirk Hammett when he was a kid too!

He pretty much wrote Master of Puppets for him.

i think he taught him and larry lelonde from primus at the same time. i prefer ler. buckethead can shred faster than satriani. i haven't seen anyone match buckethead for pure speed. he's not just fast, he can play anything. most of his stuff is pretty avant garde and out there, but he plays all kinds of stuff.

Al Dimealo is solid and so is Mark Knopfler.
Guitarists, just like any other musician, cannot be judged to be the best because it is all a matter of opinion and taste.
Chet Atkins, Eddie, Vivan Campbell, Warren DiMartini, Eric Clapton, Hendrix, Vai, Satriani, Santana, Rhoades, Gary Richrath, Frank Marino, Frank Gambale, Neil Schon and the list goes on and on and on.
I never even heard of "dimebag" before he died. I've gone through guitar god cycles from Hendrix to Page to Clapton to Ace to Eddie to Vai and Satch to Campbell to Santana to Vaughn...to each his own.

Speed doesn't equate greatness in my book..although I do love a good shreddin' solo like Vivian Campbell and...damn it...the guitarist for Dokken..what was his name. The guy who would shred with his pick hand fingers wide spread?

In the late 70's.. I forget.. the police showed up to one of our jam sessions on the south east side. Anyway they said "report of chain saw and screaming"..

It was just our very bad metal band practice.. I had a ben wah scratch pedal and another one "METAL" something cranked up lol.
