I have always detested English and its over-abundance of suffixes and prefixes. Word structure, sentence structure and even paragraphs and composition are completely unintuitive (to me).
My skills lack in grammar, yet I won the spelling bee in my school 3 years in a row and excelled in Literature. Now go ahead and correct my spelling mistakes ().

And speaking of that, how will children learn the differences between to, two and too/ they're, there, and their when there are no visual clues?
Yeah. Really. Let's keep dumbing it down for our kids, because that has worked SO well for us the past forty years. God forbid we ever set higher expectations and teach to abilities - Junior's feelings might be hurt.

That's just sad. I think it's more so the internet (i.e Chatrooms, Forums, Instant messaging, etc.) than text messaging.

Now that I think about...one word they really need to change the spelling of is Wednesday. I had the hardest time learning to spell that damn word when I was young. Is the "D" really neccesary? Why can't it be Wenesday?

You're right, even better! I think because when I was a kid I kept spelling it Wenesday...eventually I got so fed up I just spelled the abbreviation, Wed.
I do think the word "verily" is due for a comeback.
Let's make it happen.
Instead of changing the SPELLINGS of words to be phonetic, why don't we keep the words spelled as they are, but PRONOUNCE them phonetically???

This is why you have to love the Obi.
I think there is room for language to change and grow, but I don't think a wholesale revision of the spellings which, in essence, dumbs it down 'for the kids' is a bright idea.
