CBF - 1st read the Prelude to Dune trilogy.
    house Atreides
    house harkonnen
    house Corrino
    in that order.

Gives ALOT of insite into the Dune pre-story. you learn all about Jessica's beginings... who her mother was , exactly how they got that harkonnen to impregnante a Bene geserit, Duke Leto's childhood.
You get an incredible background on Bene Geserit trainign in depth.
theres a good plotline in there also of a rare GOOD harkonnen... not that he lasts long in that family.
Anyway. they are all must reads. AMAZING.
Got my series les wrong. I enjoyed the "House" series very much - they were worthy prequels.

after that read the Legends of Dune trilogy.
    wow
    Dune The Butlerian Jihad
    Dune The Machine Crusade
    Dune The Battle of Corrin

this goes back allll the way to the war withe the machines. Why it started, how it got eggrd on to completion, who took the reigns. So you get a coplete history of how nad why the original Dune universe was created and developed into.
These didn't do much for me. I found the last book very unsatisfying - it seemed suddenly way too easy to overthrow the machine empire at Corrin. Oh well.

I don't think it became too easy -I think they had finally found an edge, and were willing to make a gmable. It paid off.
But also the machine's kinda did it to themselves with the over calculationg of what is most probably going to happen.
Thats a common theme in alot of sci-fi: the computers guessing the % that this or this would happen and the crazy unpredictable humans doing the opposite.
Looking at it from a purely military view - of course the folks with the faster ships will win eventually. They just had to win by the end of book 3. Otherwise it would be more of a Douglas Adams "trilogy"*

    * there are 5 books in Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker Triology.
