As soon as I found out yesterday of Butler's exit from NY and his desire to play for our Spurs I searched and found this past season's game against the Knicks and sure enough, I had 3 quarter action. And he was very active! Rebounding with energy, much like Manu's "my ball, give it here" at ude AND scoring in the paint. He did very well, didn't get his overall points. For some reason, he didn't come back in the 4th, looked like Larry B. wanted to up the tempo and get away from halfcourt stuff, did notice that towards the end of the third Butler was trailing rest of players when his team came upcourt, was that maybe because he was overplaying and was winded, don't know for sure but he banged ok with Rasho and Nazr, never backed off.

Butler played 3 times against the Spurs (once in preseason) and put up solid numbers every game.

    Preseason - 12 pt, 8 rb, 4 blk in 23 min
    December - 11 pt in 12 min
    February - 11 pt, 9 rb (7 off) in 17 min

But, Malone said, Butler has one NBA-quality skill right now.

"I don't know if he could score on anyone at the moment, but I could put him in a game and he could rebound today," Malone said.

Found that quote on an article on Butler when he first came in the league.

Former assistant coach whent hey signed him.

Im likin this kid more every day.

By feb. I think he was already ahead of James and Curry on the depth chart. So maybe not.

That article makes the Spurs F.O. look like geniuses for stealing Butler from N.Y. I almost feel sorry for all the hype the poor kid is going to be subjected to.
But, more and more, I'm liking this move.

The Knicks aren't the only idiots here. The Timberwolves had this guy in the 2004 preseason and promptly cut him.

What the writer fails to understand is that, the knicks looked stupid way before they let this guy go.

I went to that game and Butler was the only Knick hustling. He helped keep in the game in the first half, so it wasn't garbage points.

wow big numbers. i hope he won't be like Rasho who had 21 pts vs the Spurs once but deferred much to Duncan in the offensive end and ended like ave of 7pts(?)/game...

this signing of Butler made me think of Isaiah>might be scratching his head right now.
Looked like we grab a 1st round pick this yr.huh?

    Exactly.

Spurs fans should view Butler as a lotto pick. There's a chance he comes in and puts up numbers right away but there's an even bigger chance that it takes some time to work him into things.

Much like Mahinmi, the Spurs won't be looking to throw Butler into the fire until he's ready. There's a big difference between being on the Knicks and being on a team where every play all season is under a microscope.

I don't think the knicks were THAT dumb. It was alot of money and they are stacked at the position.

But I sure am glad about the decision they made

    whoa

if NY fans are this mad over Butler(didn't happen over Nazr 2 yrs ago in exchange of Malik), maybe they really like Butler's potential and his future with the team.

    too bad.

CIA Pops just outsmarted Isaiah on this one.

At least I'm not the only one shocked that the Knicks didn't match. It should have been a no-brainer.

    Nice job, San Antonio.
I hope you're correct. If Hollinger's analysis turns out to be on target, Spurs FO will need the $$ to lockup Butler long term when Duncan, Ginobili and Parker are the only ones left with contracts in 07-08.

Man, it's just comical to watch the trainwreck that is New York. The only thing not funny about it is that my boy Malik is still there.
Maybe when he's more cost-effective salary wise, MR comes back to SA to play out his final yrs and retire.
