You cannot find an equal value trade for Beno in regards to his salary cost. Barry is another story. It's old and expensive verses young and inexpensive. Keeping Beno is a no-brainer. Trading Barry is another matter, but still only happens if you make the team better, now. Both are great shooters. Don't forget how things can be with poor shooters (Van Exel).

I regret the Spurs weren't able to consummate the Barry for Smith deal last Feb.

However, I'd be willing to part with any/all of Barry, Williams, Horry, Oberto, Beno, Bonner, rights to Scola in the right deal.

I’m ok with trading Barry, Williams, Horry, and/or Oberto for a long 3. I would prefer to keep Beno (don’t think we could get a better PG in return), Bonner (like his shot and hustle), and Scola (has potential to be a good NBA player).

At this point I wouldn't mind keeping them both.

Barry gives us an outside thread (when he's not clamming up) and maybe Beno develops into a solid career-backup...he already knows our system, he stays within himself. I dunno, I like the offseason moves...I hope we're done.

The only guy I'd give up Beno/Barry for is Speedy. Since that's not happening, I'm fine with keeping them.

Btw, has Pargo signed with anyboy yet? I doubt we get as a 4th PG...but if we do get rid of Udrih somehow Pargo would be a very nice pick-up.

You don't speak for all of us elliotfan, as you can see in this thread.

I like both Beno and Barry, who has done pretty well given lack of opportunity (and who was clutch in moments of the 2005 Finals). He can play 3 positions, hustle and shoot the 3. I think he's good to have around but would trade him for the mythical beast we seek.

As for Williams, why is everyone writing him off??? He's likely to be traded after the 21st, but if he's not he's perfect to back-up Bowen for a year - ga ritty, D-oriented hustle guy.

People write off Williams because he barely played last season. And those who saw him play last season pretty much considered him washed up.

We'll see if he has any game left. I haven't even heard that he's come to town or anything.

The guy two years ago had stud numbers and then was traded to Toronto.

That place makes any player regress.

Give the guy a shot peeps before bagging on him.

this is funny: the 'career stats' link in eric williams' bio on NBA.com brings up the following numbers:

The solution to Beno: don't have him bring the ball up. Always have him paired with either Barry or Manu in the backcourt. This isn't a PG centric offense anyway. Against Detroit in the Finals, when Tony was on the bench, either Barry or Manu brought the ball up. The determination was made by whoever DIDN'T have Hunter hawking them.

You have to play to your player's strengths, and stay away from their weaknesses. Beno is an excellent shooter, and an above average passer with sharp court vision. He just has some issues bringing the ball up, so don't have him do it.

^^^ It's not difficult to bring the ball up but it's diffcult for Beno not to crack down under full court press and intimdiating defense. So, he can only contribute as a spot up shooter or as a good passer against run and gun team

You can't hold a point guard's hand his entire career. Either he can bring up the ball under Chuck Hayes pressure or he doesn't belong in the league.

Then why have Udrih on the court at all?

    Just put in 3 sg's/sf's.

Because he's a young shooter who can space the floor and create in the half court? How ing terrible...

Maybe he isn't John Stockton, maybe he's Steve Kerr. I don't remember Kerr having to bring the ball up in Chi-town. Pippin or Jordan did that. Phil Jackson was at least that smart.

If you just want a shooter who can create...

Why not stick in a big physical SG who can play some D too? If Beno isn't playing the point I see no point in him being in the game. He isn't that great of a shooter.

As one-dimensional as Kerr's game was, he could bring up the ball. He did here. I daresay he could bring it up against Chuck Hayes.

I don't see why this shouldn't be expected of an NBA point guard. I think he can actually do it.

I was going to say that too.

Beno just needs to get through it. If he comes into camp in game shape and establishes himself as the real backup, he should be able to bring the ball up. Every other PG in the league does it, why not Beno.
