You caught American basketball fans on a bad day. Greece beat the U.S. national team, so people are cranky, inasmuch as we like to regard ourselves as the best basketball nation in the world, yet cannot win an international tourney even when we try hard like other nations.
And the wars in question were the American Revolutionary War (which we obviously won) and the War of 1812 (which, frankly, was more of a draw).
And while many are aware that Tottenham Hotspur exists, most Americans who are not Latino regard the English Premier League as about equal in importance to women's billiards.
What you Yanks think is significant... to us would be insignificant. We have a history longer than 250 years, so there is much much more to learn, and is also the reason we know more and interact with more cultures.
