The way that story presents, perhaps the sudden cardiac arrest was due to the impact of the stingray... the is a "small window" if you are hit in the chest during the relative refractory period of the cardiac cycle, that can R-on-T phenomenon which leads to a lethal arrhythmia.

Absoulte refractory Period - The time when myocardium is unresponsive to any stimuli.

A stingray death is so unusual! How many people die from stingrays in a year? My guess would be in the single digits. This is a freak accident.

Man that story is weird. Did the sting ray get a lucky as shot in and put the barb into his heart, or was it just something that happened to his cardiovascular system due to the sting?
What a weird ass way to go too. I always figured it'd be a snake or croc or one of Australia's poisonous spiders.

Huh. After a quick google, it sounds as though sting ray barbs to the abdominal cavity are usually fatal - all but one reported in the world have been fatal.

Actually, it should more likely of been a crocodile. They are bigger, and found in Australia. And the sting rays over here get freaking big.
There are so many dangerous animals over here... its a good thing hardly any of them are in the highly populated areas!
Its strange that he is so famous in America etc, hes an afterthought in Australia. Most people here are severely embarrassed by him.
