Horry playing the 4 with Tim at the 5??
Brought up 0.4. too- hateful man!
wow. tony's pretty suave in this interview. and i like his confidence and the fact that game 7 from the Dallas series still lingers in his mind. i can't wait for the season to start.
Edit: and him calling dallas out on losing to miami made me chuckle![]()
Tony is wearing the same outfit he did from his interview earlier today. Looks nice though- shirt, sweater, jeans- almost preppy.
Right away SAS brings up loss to Dallas.
He asked Tony how it happened.
Tony said our first mistake was going down 3-1 then talked about coming back first in the series and then in game seven.
Said basketball is about details. Our team is good enough to beat Dallas it just wasn;t our year.
When Stephen get pressing for a further explanation about what went wrong, Tony avoided answering and finally laughed and said he didn't want to be fined by the NBA.
Tony says that Timmy has been able to rest and he expects to see him back in MVP form.
Thinks Robert will be the one to help Timmy.
Tony says he wants KG to be traded to LA so that the rivalry between the Spurs and the Lakers will be renewed
"tony's pretty suave in this interview"
Don't be fooled by Tony's poor, mumbly pronunciation of English as a second language, and his usually generic pablum and stock answers in interviews.
The guy has tons of self-confidence, amply seen when he MC'd the team introductions at the 2004 Spurs Tip-off luncheon in front of a 1000 people. An extremely professional, entertaining, and funny peformance.
About WCF:
Tony said: Even though we lost to Dallas, I still think we are the team to beat."
When Stephen asked why, Tony said, " Well because we have two championships. Dallas didn't win against Miami"
Go Tony! Go Tony!![]()

My god as much as I hate the Lakers, I miss that rivalry.
Tony's words: "I guarantee we'll make the NBA Finals."
Wow- there was a lot of info.
Tony said that he and Kobe were filming a commercial together the other day. Tony and Kobe were talking about old Lakers/ Spurs rivalry.
Stephen brought up 0.4.
Tony reminisced about those final seconds. Said it was one of the best games he has ever played in even though we lost.
About the finger he injured this summer:
Said Pop was mad when he got hurt. Pop called Tony right away to tell him he was not playing anymore.
Tony mentioned being present for a "heated" conference call between Spurs and the National Team.
Stephen asked about Pop:
Tony said Pop is a great guy that will push you to your limits. Pop is very tense, very tough to play for. Tony says Pop brought out the best in him.
Tony said when he first came to the Spurs sometimes Pop was so tough on him it may Tony want to cry.
Stephen asked if Tony ever wanted to quit. Tony said no. " I didn't want to quit. I am not a quitter. I just wanted to choke Pop." Then he laughed.
Tony talked about the U.S. in International compe ion.
He said it is tough even for him to transition from NBA rules to European ones- one big difference is 3 sec rule.
Expects that in 3-5 yrs USA will get the gold back. Thinks having Chauncey and Kobe back will really help.
Stephen mentioned last year's All Star Celebrity game where he was the GM and Eva was the coach of his team.
Stephen called Eva his inspiration and asked how she is doing.
Tony said Eva is doing great- is in Mexico for a photo shoot.
Stephen asked how Tony and Eva are doing.
Tony said they are doing great; he is happy. Tony agreed with Smith's statement that Tony is the luckiest guy in the world.
Stephen asked why that was. Tony said Eva is a great woman, very supportive, loves basketball which is great for me.
Smith asked how Eva manages to be at so many games. Tony laughed and said he had to thank the Spurs for that for the salary to pay for a private plane.
Smith ended the interview by asking Tony what the Spurs were going to do this year.
Tony: Well I am on the Stephen A Smith Show. I am going to guarantee that the Spurs are in the NBA Finals.
And that was the end of the interview.
I couldn't keep track of all that was said- the above are just my favorite parts.![]()
Thanks for the Recap Angel. I completely missed the show and do to the drought of info this off season I really wanted to know what Tony said.
Superb recap.... thanks (again... and again... and again... you are the recap queen)
Hmm, maybe Pop needs to try the same methods on, oh, I don't know, say . . . Beno?
Methods like perhaps letting him play? Yes, that would be helpful.![]()
That's something to be earned, not charity.
Tony wasn't always a superstar... I mean there was likely a reason Pop was yelling at him.![]()
All I want is for Beno to be given an authentic chance this year- continued focused coaching and consistent playing time.
If Beno is given such an opportunity and squanders it, I'll still love him but I will also be the first to say it was his bad.
Give me a break, he's already been given that. He's working on his second chance now.
This could go on all day.![]()
Whatever chance this is, I believe Beno is going to take advantage of it and have a great year.
And as that is in the best interest of the team, I am sure you hope for that as well.![]()
