Interesting. 2 employees at the Best Buy here told us it's required for them. Maybe their store manager just tells them that.
Oh, it's not company policy, per se. It's just passed down to the blue shirts.

It really varies but sometimes it's a good idea. I had a microwave that broke right after the original warranty expired, I got an extended on my next microwave because I use that damn thing a few times every day...

On my lawn mower though I didn't, on something mechanical like that if you just change the oil and air filter they can last forever...

A Microwave costs like $100, what did the extended warranty cost?

I bought a laptop 2 years ago and bought the extended warranty. I figured I might need it with it bouncing around in my truck. What a waste of $110, the think has never had one problem. No more wasting my money on that crap.

The hard sell for extended warranties is coming at the same time that manufacturers' warranties are getting skimpier. Companies are reducing coverage for everything from appliances to TVs.

At the same time, makers of pricey goods like laptops are scrimping on coverage for labor. Terms have shrunk from 1 year to 90 days in some instances, making repairs potentially expensive even though the parts are free.
i think the government only requires an electronic device to have a 90 day warranty.

I just returned a car amp that stopped working after about a year to Circuit City. The warranty was $14 and I bought it. Picked me up a brand new one yesterday.

On the other hand, I've bought a few others warranties and never used them so I guess they are still up on me!

I went to Office Max to get a copier and was checking out with the same guy that "sold" me on the copier. He thought it was a great unit back on the copier aisle. I let him go through his whole warranty spiel and kept asking leading questions. He told me the brand I was buying was very "repair prone". He told me it had a lousy factory warranty. He told me that if it broke after 30 days I would have to "send it off for repair". He told me it was virtually assured to break in the first year. He finally got to his "close" and asked if he could add the warranty. I very nicely told him that he could keep that piece of copier he sold me and that I was going down to Costco to buy my copier where I could take it back "no questions asked" for a year for replacement if it broke without paying extra and just walked out leaving it on the counter.

Costco kicks ass on warranties. I had a printer break that I bought there. I had the box but didn't have the receipt. I boxed it up and took it over there. They have all your purchase data in their computer and found where I had bought it 11 1/2 months earlier. They just told me to go pick out a new one and bring it back to them. They had one that was faster/cheaper than the one I bought a year earlier and I walked out of there with a new printer and $20 back.

a lot of those extended warranty plans are a bit misleading too - with some manufacturers, the extended warranty only picks up after the original manufacturer warranty. as a result, the extended warranty covers some stuff like damage that the manufacturer limited warranty does not and the customer ends up jumping through hoops to actually get their machine serviced if it has been damaged by a drop or a spill (which i feel should never be covered under a warranty - a replacement plan is a different animal though)

Reminds me of some jackass from EB games who tried to sell me warranty of Gran Turismo 4. He tried to claim people returned it with circular scratches and that he wouldn't sell it to me if I didn't buy it? I said what the , and told him I was going to Best Buy.

Then when I bought my slim PS2 another guy at EB games tried to shove warranty down my throat and I told him not to worry, I was getting the PS2 chipped anyways.
