Brokaw is wrong for apologizing. He either believes this and his anecdote is true "some people tell me they don't want brown grand babies" OR it is not true and that makes him a liar.

He apologized because he offended. This is a major reason why the USA is nose diving. Serious discussions are taboo. You can't run a household in this manner, why would a society be different.
