I had the same thought and I say no. I think that teams should take care of whatever their business and that whomever they have from the trade deadline on should be their team.

In fact I don't really like the idea of someone coming out of retirement in the middle of a season.
thanks angel I agree with you

Vets (especially those without a ring ) can sign at any time during the season for the minimum. A team's cap amount is irrelevant, according to the rules.

I don't really see what the problem is. The cap is about all the control that needs to be in place for this situation, and that can (but won't always) make sure that it isn't just about who offers the biggest deal. With the cap in place, teams that are likely near the top of the standings are also likely to be in a position to only offer the league minimum to a street free agent at any point during the season. Teams that are at the bottom of the standings aren't likely to need or want such players. And teams that are under the cap shouldn't be penalized because they take care of their business and still have some money to spend.

More than that, what I don't see is the difference between deciding to sign Scottie Pippen or Reggie Miller and deciding to sign, say, Stephen Graham or Melvin Sanders. If a team thinks a player can help it, the team is willing to pay that player, and the player is willing to accept what the team offers, it shouldn't make any difference what his name is. I'm much more in favor of a team being able to improve itself (to the extent that is possible) with street free agents than I am for stifling the commerce of the league and freezing rosters after the end of February.

It's easy to see why fans of other teams would be threatened by a Pippen or a Miller signing on with a contending team late in the season. But to simplify things, if Pippen or Miller wanted to sign on with their team, no worries. Or not.

To me, Miller & Pippen signing with a contending team at this late date seems wrong. They didn't have to fight with blood, sweat and tears all year long with the team. They would get just enough time to see if they still have it, and if they don't they "wont have it" for very long

And hey, they get the call before Graham or Sanders, how fair is that?
