Texas chose to adopt the holiday.

Legions of African-American NFL players threatened to boycott Arizona unless they adopted the holiday.

    Big difference.
RIIIGHT. Arizona actually had the holiday first. It was rescinded by the governor (who was impeached shortly thereafter), then reinstated (by popular vote, I might add).

Meanwhile, in Texas....Jasper. Vidor. The list goes on....

Denial isn't helping your case. If it wasn't for Arizona's desperation to host the Super Bowl we'd probably still be waiting for the holiday to be adopted in the state.

Super Bowl XXVII was originally scheduled to be played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, the home of the Phoenix Cardinals.[1] Immediately after the Cardinals relocated from St. Louis, Missouri to the Phoenix, Arizona area in 1988, the NFL was eager to hold a Super Bowl in that state.

Meanwhile, Martin Luther King Day, the United States federal holiday honoring civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., was observed for the first time in 1986. However, the holiday was only celebrated in 27 states and the District of Columbia during that first year. Opponents across the nation tried to stop the holiday from being recognized in their own local areas.

By 1991, most states had adopted Martin Luther King Day (though New Hampshire called it Civil Rights Day) except for Arizona. In 1986, an Arizona holiday honoring King had been declared by Governor Bruce Babbitt after a bill to create the holiday failed in the state legislature. (On May 2, 2000, South Carolina governor Jim Hodges signed a bill to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday an official state holiday. South Carolina is the last state to recognize the day as a holiday.)

Newly-elected Governor Evan Mecham rescinded the holiday in 1987 on the grounds that the holiday had been illegally created.[2] Legislation to create the holiday was passed by the state legislature in 1989, but opponents to the holiday succeeded in forcing the holiday to undergo a ballot initiative.[3] Arizona voters rejected the 1990 initiative to create a King holiday.[4]

The NFL, which had an increasing percentage of African American players, and urged by the NFL Players' Association, voted to yank Super Bowl XXVII from Arizona, and awarded it instead to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

Faced with the boycott, Arizona voters finally approved the holiday by ballot in 1992, and on March 23, 1993, the NFL awarded Super Bowl XXX (to be played January 1996) to Tempe.

Johnny RIngo insists Arizona's racist because the state adopted a MLK holiday the same year as Texas (1992). Maybe he's on to something....
And all of this has what to do with the fact that the Suns cant get out of the playoffs without being eliminated.

Morons ... don't judge an entire state, or city, by the actions of a misguided few. I'll go on a limb and say that acceptance or rejection of MLK day has no bearing of whether you are racist either.

Now, if you want to see some racism, come to New Orleans, except it's hatred of white people here.

They must be racist then, unlike Texas where blacks get dragged behind trucks and sent to death row for crimes they didn't commit.

Can't imagine why. I'd hate white people too if they moved the Hornets to my home town.

Third day after championship #4* and Spurs fans still haven't forgotten the asterisk. It even compels them to keep posting about the Suns. Good to know you realize who your daddy is.
You guys are like a scorn lover that lost the woman of their dreams to a better looking guy with more money. It is over guys move on let it go and try not to hit the too hard.

Maybe Shred is on to something here. I think this championship team does deserve something of a black mark on its record for needing six games to beat a team full of players lead by a coach and a owner and supported by the biggest fans in the league. Shame on you Spurs!

Percentage of black population in Texas: 11.5%

Percentage of black population in Arizona: 3.1%

Seems like the African Americans are staying far away from Arizona after that MLK Day debacle.

We should have eliminated the Suns in 5 actually. Manu decided to give the Suns a game or two to make em feel better.

Gotta run, but would just like to point out (1) at the time the NFL yanked the Super Bowl from Phoenix/Tempe, both cities had paid MLK holidays, (2) the State of Arizona had an unpaid MLK holiday, (3) the NFL had exactly 1 black head coach and no black owners (still the case today), and (4) the NFL didn't give its own employees the day off.

Should be very entertaining actually. I'm quite anticipating the S0ns implosion with all the salary cap problem they're going to have to deal with. I've said it before and I'll say it again:

not that has anything to do with the Spurs. Just a fact.
