    Steinbrenner.
The Yankees lost 25 million last year.
    This is a good thing?

Of course, the Yankees own their own sports TV network in the largest media market in the US that makes up for any operating losses.
That's the whole topic, an owner crying about a few mil. Holt is a poor rich owner.
Maybe you should own the Spurs. You make it sound so easy.

Yeah I am higher up in HEB, and Mr. Butt is very, very charitable. He gives alot back to every community HEB is present in, and he is also very good to his partners. For example, he gave every partner in the company a $100 bonus check for the last two years straight. However, I never see the Mr. Butt spending money on something such as a sports franchise, as he would much rather spent that on charity operations or giving back to his partners. Also, HEB is about to expand into the Dallas- Fort Worth area with plus stores only, so he has many expenses ahead of him.

Hmmmm... I won't vote the the tax...We're already taxed to death here ...
Trust me. Taxes here in San Antonio don't even hold a candle to my own native Montreal (the city is STILL paying for the 1976 Olympics!!! )

People seem to have no clue how much the county (that is, the citizens of the county) got screwed on the original arena deal. I find it odd that people gripe about using tax money to subsidize healthcare for the poor- but not to subsidize business profits for the wealthy. Is the county going to build ANY other business in San Antonio their headquarters- I don't think so. The Spurs think they can bank on another championship to get the county to continue this tax, but it's time and intent is over.

From the article, it looks like several other en ies are looking to take a piece of the tax revenues.
Tourism industry representatives want to see at least $125 million earmarked for San Antonio River improvement projects. Other groups are also pushing for a sizeable chunk, including youth-sports advocates who say San Antonio desperately needs more sports fields to aid in the fight against childhood obesity.
Is the time for the river and the fat kids over too?

Losing the Spurs to another community would have been a far better deal.

I'm not exactly sure how the county got screwed on the original arena deal, since the Spurs organization kicked in at least some percentage of the costs to build the arena and the majority of the financing came from a tax increase that hadn't otherwise been in place -- a tax that is imposed only upon those who use car rentals and local hotel rooms, which means that it tends to be a more progressive tax.

So, it's money that didn't exist before, taken largely from those who can afford those payments, that was used to keep a beneficial asset in the community while at the same time providing increased revenues for one of the county's premier annual events.

Yeah I am higher up in HEB
I find this statement rather curious....how can you be higher up than the CEO of a company?
On top of that the company is named after his very family.

I don't deny Butt's charitable donations at all, it is just certain people think that a different owner would make a world of difference in the team. Until Holt became majority owner the Spurs were also-rans every year....now the Spurs have 4 rings.

The hotel tax didn't hurt the local economy then, that I know of, it shouldn't now....if it did hurt the economy please show me a link to that and maybe I'll change my mind about the tax.

Insurance companies, banks, and the oil people run this country, and have waged a long and successful PR war to keep us all in the dark. So we tilt at windmills like personal injury lawyers, illegal immigration, and universal healthcare while "the rich get richer and poor get poorer". In other words, the people get screwed left and right, stadium deals just being the smallest tip of the iceberg. I like the quote from The Edge, where the Anthony Hopkins character says "Never feel sorry for a man who owns a plane."

What about the AT&T Center deal has screwed the people of Bexar County?

Just something -- some proof of an adverse impact upon rank-and-file citizens as a result of the deal by which the arena was financed and is operated. Any proof at all would be great.

I'm still not sure exactly how a never before enacted, truly progressive tax was somehow harmful to Bexar County citizens. I've seen no proof that tourists are staying away from San Antonio because of the tax; remarkably, in fact, hoteliers are building new (and, in some cases, even larger) structures -- that would be an odd business choice of taxes were causing people to stay away from San Antonio. So, we've managed to make those who visit our city the people who have financed the construction of an arena that proved to be the only workable solution for keeping the Spurs in San Antonio. That effort has offered employment opportunities that wouldn't have otherwise existed, both on the immediate premises of the arena as well as at other more distant locations that are benefitted by the events that take place at the arena.

Yeah, I just don't see how any citizen of Bexar County has gotten screwed over by that deal. I'd be interested to see what the proof of such injury is.

IIRC, the Spurs used the proceeds from the naming rights deal to cover their portion of the construction costs.

Well, the funds generated from the tax could've been used for other purposes.

Wherein the screwing occurred. Thank you.

How on earth the county agreed to give the naming rights revenue to the Spurs is beyond me. Spurs get, if I understand correctly, $2M per year for 20 years for an arena built by the county. Shouldn't the county get that money?

What about the AT&T Center deal has screwed the people of Bexar County?
    Screwed out of $40M.

Sure, the county also gave the Spurs most of the other revenue streams from the arena as well.

Newsflash: it was a sweetheart deal. Any other stale revelations?

Look at it this way. Without the Spurs providing the impetus as well as providing a guaranteed 45 or so plus games a year there is no way a state of the art arena facility opens in San Antonio 5 years ago. Like it or not, the Spurs do provide a great deal of value to San Antonio in terms of direct expenditures, free nat'l and int'l advertising, civic pride, etc... Is it the absolute best way to spend those tax receipts? No, but now San Antonio has a real arena and not the 40 year old Hemisfair or the 130 year old Freeman.

ing about taxes going to major public works projects is a San Antonio de Bexar pasttime. Between the CA Stubbs crowd and LULAC or whoever it's a wonder that San Antonio is able to progress at all as a community.
