I watched this show yesterday for the first time. It sucks.

It's so fake. If he's dying from the heat, why is the camera crew fine? The whole time it feels like there's a resort just off camera and he's just pretending to be trying to survive.

I was so disappointed because I thought it might be good.
It's not about the group trying to survive, it's just about Bear. The crew is there in case if he can't make it then they are there to help. The places he goes to are real. LMAO The Australian Outback, A Costa Rican Rain Forest, The Pacific Ocean, The Rocky mountains, African Savannah, just to name a few of the places he gets deserted, aren't likely places for resorts..........

But how are we to know that Bear isn't given a nice cup of hot tea, and sleeping bag, a hearty dinner, etc when the camera's turn off for him to "sleep".

Survivor man is out there by himself, he's got nobody. Bear has the safety net of an entire crew.

What does Bear being able to "punk the " out of Survivorman have anything to do with how credible eithers show is?

And how are we to know that Stroud doesn't have a cell phone and the crew is waiting for his call once the camera goes out. It says that he is givin minimal supplies: He is typically given minimal supplies (such as one energy bar, a pack of gum, a credit card, etc.) to emulate a real-life survival scenario. Your main point is on assumptions, so if that's the game, I'll base my points off assumptions as well.

Bear is a TRAINED BRITISH SPEACIAL OPS FORCE IN: Grylls passed UK Special Forces Selection, serving as a sabre soldier, trained in unarmed combat, desert and winter warfare, combat survival, medics, parachuting, signals, evasive driving, climbing and explosives.

He served for 3 years in 21 SAS, one of two Territorial Army regiments in the Special Air Service referred to as the "SAS(R)". 21 SAS specializes in Close Target Reconnaissance and attack(CTR). During his time with 21 SAS Grylls served actively in North Africa twice. His military career ended abruptly, however, in 1996, when a routine parachute exercise in southern Africa went wrong[citation needed]. His canopy ripped severely and caused him to spiral towards earth from 16,000ft at twice the normal speed, leaving him with three broken vertebrae and left him struggling to feel his legs.[1] Grylls spent the next 12 months in rehabilitation and, with his military career over, directed his efforts into trying to get well enough to fulfill his childhood dream of climbing Everest.

Grylls no longer serves in the British Special Forces but he was awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant Commander in the UK's Royal Naval Reserve.[2]

He's climbed Mt. EVerest. Holy this guy is more credible in surviving than some average joe(Stroud).

Yeah and we have to take his word for it that he doesn't recieve any help from them.

Just like we have to take Strouds word taht he doesn't have a cell phone and once the Camera is turned off and a helicopter doesn't come with beer, cigs, porn and cheetoes.

Have you ever even seen Survivor Man?

I've seen both shows, and I enjoy them both. I don't see why it is so troubling for you when I say that Bear films with a crew, and Stroud does not. Those are just facts about the show.

I'm not troubled, it's just that you're sounding like that Les Stroud is superior than Bear Grylls over the sole fact that he doesn't carry a film crew with him.

Neither one of those guys is surviving ing anything. With the amount of money they're bringing in, it's in their TV network's best interests to keep those guys as close to perfectly safe as they can keep them. It's all a huge illusion. If T Park brought in big ratings, they could make him look like the greatest survival expert on earth. Both shows are, to some extent, fake with the illusion of danger. But I'll take Man Vs. Wild cuz at least Bear drinks water out of elephant .

In terms of how the show is filmed, yes, Stroud's show is superior.

Because there is that chance that once the camera goes off, Bear recieves 1st class service from the crew, that's an assumption you might have, right?

But, what's stopping me or anybody else from assuming that Les could have a phone and can call his crew that is stationed 10 miles away from him for supplies.

Not to mention that Les has to lug around 50 pounds of camera equipment.

    In the end...........

    Stallone>>>>Stroud>>>>Grylls

50lbs? That makes it sound iffy, why would he need that much equipment? All he would need is a camcorder and a tripod.

He's not making a home video. He's filming for a show that will be shown on television. Tripods, lenses, multiple cameras, lens, audio equipment etc.

It looks like Bear isn't as hardcore as some thought he wasn't.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6911748.stm

Born Survivor featured British adventurer Bear Grylls dealing with "perilous situations" in the wild.

But a crew member told the Sunday Times some nights were spent in hotels.

Channel 4 insisted Grylls was never billed as working entirely unaided, but promised to raise the matter with the production company that made the show.

American survival consultant Mark Weinert, who was recruited by Diverse Productions, told the paper Grylls claimed to be stranded on a desert island on one occasion.

He often directly addresses the production team, including the cameraman, making it clear he is receiving an element of back-up

    Channel 4 statement
However, he was actually in Hawaii and spent some of his time there in a motel, Mr Weinert alleged.

Another time, he added, Grylls was filmed building a raft by himself, whereas the crew had actually put it together and dismantled it beforehand, to ensure that it worked.

And in a further episode, supposedly "wild" horses rounded up by Grylls had come from a local trekking facility, he claimed.

    Further investigation

Channel 4 said in a statement that Born Survivor was "not an observational do entary series, but a 'how-to' guide to basic survival techniques in extreme environments".

"The programme explicitly does not claim that presenter Bear Grylls' experience is one of unaided solo survival.

"For example, he often directly addresses the production team, including the cameraman, making it clear he is receiving an element of back-up."

The broadcaster said Grylls carried out his own stunts and did place himself in perilous situations, "though he does so within clearly-observed health and safety guidelines required on productions of this kind".

"However, we take any allegations of misleading our audiences seriously and will be looking into this further with Diverse over the next few days."

The series was originally made for the Discovery Channel in the US and was acquired for UK transmission by Channel 4.

Diverse Productions declined to elaborate on Channel 4's statement, while Grylls's agent was unavailable for comment
I still do enjoy the show, seeing him carve up a dead dear carcas (planted ther perhaps) drink water from elephant dung and hop into the bog to show you how to get out is still entertaining.

Yeah, I was disappointed in this show. I saw it talked about so much on here that I DVR'ed an episode. Good premise but was too unrealistic for my taste.

Like in this outback one, they get to a cliff with the only way to get down being a tree in which he climbs down about 75 feet to the ground. Are you telling me that after he climbs down, the camera crew all climbs down? Or do they take a couple hours to setup rappelling equipment while the guy just sits in the shade and waits? I don't understand how people just don't see right through it.

And it's also pretty lame that while he's climbing something he talks about how dangerous it is and gives a couple stories of other people doing the same thing and dying. Wouldn't he want to be concentrating on his extremely dangerous maneuver instead up giving us some elementary school level history tale about Aborigines?

Plus bro is like 4-foot-11, 85 pounds. It's much easier to survive in the elements and climb things when you are so tiny. A regular sized male would need two or three times more water.

    Good premise. Poorly executed.

Bear himself didn't approve of those methods. It stated he was disappointed, that it was forced and it was from Discovery channel producers. Still if your not going to take a trained speacial OPS forces and the youngest man to climb Everest over a film producer in the wild than be my guest. Shows how dumb you really are.
