Bridge collapses into Mississippi River during rush hour in Minneapolis
By PATRICK CONDON
Associated Press Writer
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ The entire span of an interstate bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River during evening rush hour Wednesday, sending vehicles, tons of concrete and twisted metal crashing into the water.
The Interstate 35W bridge, which stretches between Minneapolis and St. Paul, was in the midst of being repaired when it broke into several huge sections.
The Homeland Security Department had received no indications Wednesday night that the collapse was related to an act of terrorism, department spokesman Russ Knocke said in Washington.
"We continue to monitor the situation. At this time, there's no indication of a nexus to terrorism," Knocke said.
It was not clear how many people were injured. WCCO-AM reported that one body was seen being pulled from the area, covered with a blue sheet.
A burning truck and a school bus clung to one slanted slab, while at least eight cars and a truck were submerged in the river.
The bus had just crossed the bridge before it crumpled into pieces, and broadcast reports indicated the children on the bus exited out the back door.
Ramon Houge told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he was on his way home from work on the bridge when heard a rumbling noise, saw the ground collapse and cars go down.
Traffic was bumper to bumper and hundreds of people would have been involved, he said. He said cars backed up as best they could and he parked in a construction zone and was finally able to turn around and drive off the bridge. "It didn't seem like it was real," he said.
Dozens of vehicles were scattered and stacked on top of each other amid the rubble. Some people were stranded on parts of the bridge that aren't completely in the water.
Local television stations captured video of injured people being carried up the riverbank. There was no official word on injuries, but dozens of rescue vehicles were there. Divers were also in the water.
Gregory Wernick Sr., Rockford, Ill., drove over the bridge shortly before the collapse. He stopped to get a drink nearby and heard commotion so he went back.
"I figure I crossed about 10 minutes before it happened," he said. "That's just too close to call."
He was standing about 200 feet away on top of a parking ramp with large group of people.
"I've never seen anything like this," he said.

The arched bridge, which was built in 1967, rises about 64 feet above the river. Workers have been repairing the 40-year-old bridge's surface as part of improvements along that stretch of the interstate, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported on its Web site.

Damn that media for reporting what the Dept. of Homeland Security is saying. Damn them to heck.
hey idiot, why would you want it to be terror related?
and the FBI and CIA or whoever is involved, and they are high tech. they could find out what kind of porn you watch... so i'm sure they know what they're talking about.
Cuz if they come out and say this is possible terrorism, people are gonna wanna blow up.
I really wonder how this can happen. Inspections? Maintenance? Testing? Sensors?
Steel structures have been around for 150 years. It ain't rocket science. And this doesn't look like artsy-farty new high-tech design. Of the two adjacent bridges, it looks like the newer of the two because it's got more lanes.
IH35 is Federal, somebody cut back the budget for iinfrastructure maintenance?
I remember a few years ago some report that 50K brideges in the USA were in need of maintenance, but their was no money for it.

The media isn't making the determination. They are reporting what is being said. Blame the DHS if you believe it's terrorism.

The construction going on here in Minneapolis is insane. From what the locals have told me, they were working on numerous highway interchanges and widening roads (think San Antonio right now). The city then landed the National Republican Convention next year and were advised that ALL construction had to be completed 6 months prior to the convention. Due to this, the construction has been ongoing 24/7 for months now.
Some construction guy on Fox is saying that the highways were just inspected and found numerous "stress fractures." He hasn't read the reports to know whether they were detrimental to the structure of the bridge or not because he hasn't seen the report, though.
My corporate campus is in Minneapolis, the good news is so far I haven't heard of anyone from work that is involved and/or injured. That is incredible scary.

The Twins-Royals game tomorrow night has been postponed.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Thursday's Twins-Royals afternoon game has been postponed in light of the tragic I-35W bridge collapse that took place in Minneapolis on Wednesday night.
The team has also postponed Thursday evening's groundbreaking ceremony for the new ballpark.
At about 6:05 p.m. CT on Wednesday, the four-lane 35W bridge near the Metrodome collapsed into the Mississippi River.
Twins officials contemplated canceling the game, but were concerned that an influx of traffic into the area could impede rescue vehicles. There was a moment of prayer before the game and fans were encouraged to stay off their cell phones and exit calmly if they were going to leave.
More information concerning the rescheduled game and the groundbreaking ceremony will be posted as soon as it's available.

no, its called reality.
The quicker you understand thats how the new world is, the better.
It wouldn't shock me at all if this might be terroristic, but not revealed till later.
Ya never know.
