Bruno, is there a minimum the extension could be for money-wise? I know it used to be that an extension had to be at least 75% of the final year, but don't know if that's the case any longer. If you don't know, I'll look it up later.

    Thanks.
I don't think there is a minimum and I see nothing in the CBA saying that there is a minimum :

Cool. It doesn't take a young guy to play hard-nosed defense, which is what the Spurs are all about.

It will be fun to watch Bruce frustrate Dallas, Phoenix, and Ray Allen this year while the Spurs sweep those three teams (Mavs, Suns, Celtics) during the regular season.

    Thanks for investigating.

Perhaps the Spurs will give him two more years at the maximum he is allowed as a way to say thank you for all the years Bowen took less money. More likely, though, would be one year guaranteed and then the second year partially guaranteed.

Anyone remember Malik Rose? Wasn't his contract a "reward" too? Obviously Bowen means much, much more to these Spurs than Rose did, but I'm just hoping the extension isn't too big.....

NBA: Spurs sign Bowen to two-year extension

Web Posted: 10/07/2007 05:05 PM CDT

    By Mike Monroe
    Express-News Staff Writer

He’s the second-oldest player on a team Spurs coach Gregg Popovich calls “older than ,” but Bruce Bowen likely will be playing for the Spurs when he is 38 years old.

    advertisement

A two-year contract extension Bowen signed Sunday may take him to retirement, though Popovich swears he has seen no drop-off in the defensive skill that has made him an NBA All-Defensive team for a fourth consecutive season in 2006-07.

The deal will pay Bowen $4 million in each of the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons, though the second year of the extension is not fully guaranteed, according to an NBA executive familiar with the details.

Popovich, who calls Bowen both a freak of nature and a product of diligent preparation and conditioning, said Bowen does “anything that can be done that a human do to make sure he is ready to go.”

“He’s obviously been an important part of what we do,” Popovich said. He’s a consummate pro, always prepared and his work ethic is incomparable, He deserves it. Night in and night out he’s the best perimeter defender in the league. He likes the challenge. He’s not gong to stop everybody every night, but people don’t want to be guarded by him and he sets the done for us.”

Bowen, a 6-7 swingman, is entering his seventh season with the Spurs. Bowen has earned a spot on the NBA’s All-Defensive Team in each of the last seven seasons (First Team 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007; Second Team – 2001, 2002, 2003). Tim Duncan and New Jersey’s Jason Kidd are the only active players in the NBA who can make the same claim.

Bowen was the only Spur to play in all 82 games last season. He enters the 2007-08 season with a streak of 436 consecutive games played, the longest active streak in the NBA and a Spurs franchise record. He has started all 436.

Bowen is the Spurs all-time playoff leader in three-pointers made with 134 and ranks second on the Spurs all-time regular season list in three-pointers made with 529. Bowen’s .439 (134-305) shooting percentage from three-point range during the playoffs is second on the Spurs all-time playoff list and his .401 (529-1,319) mark from downtown in the regular season ranks fifth among Spurs all-time leaders.

Bruce can play for a while still. Age is just a number with him.

    Nice work Spurs.

Well, it's Monroe. Those numbers could well be wrong, very wrong.

Oh, and SD21, try to keep up. With all of the players re-signed this summer already, we were pretty much at the cap or close enough to it for it not to matter, FA wise for next year already.

Have you ever said anything positive about this team/organization?
I'm sorry, I don't want to sound rude.
But I don't remember ever reading a post of yours that was positive about anything.
When we swept the Cavs, you ed about Parker getting MVP.

I think you are a fan, not a troll.
But damn, just once could you smile about anything regarding the Spurs?

Excellent move. One of the great things about Udoka is that he should allow Pop to limit Bruce's minutes more this season, helping to a)keep him fresh for defensive possessions at the end and b)extend his effectiveness by a year or two.

Well deserved. And I thought Bowen would start declining two years ago. Overall, he's a better player now than he was in 2005.

Bowen is the last old guy I would want to get rid of.

What young guy is going to do what he does as well as he does it?

I like the fact that Bruce is still trying to improve his game at this late stage in his career. Penetrating drives and short pull-up jumpers once in a while can cathch the defense napping and he actually makes a few w/c is nice.. FTs is a lost cause, I think.

Good deal for both the Spurs and Bowen. There's no situation I could imagine in which Bowen isn't worth bringing back for the 2008-09 season. At the very worst, he's a very good spot situational player off the bench.

But with how Bowen played in the Finals last year, there's no reason to think $4M for the '09 year won't be a bargain.

It wouldn't shock me to see Bruce playing (effectively) into his early 40s like Kevin Willis did.

at the rate he's going why not his late 40's? By the time he's 47 he'd be bad enough to play decent defense.

No, Malik's contract wasn't a "reward" contract. It was because he was an effective player that was being offered more money in free agency (by the Lakers).

Anyway, congrats to Bowen and to the Spurs for keeping him. This isn't a reward contract either. It's a bargain contract, once again.
