SRV was simply amazing. My friends own a studio up in austin that my friend Jay's step dad used to play and record in back in the early austin music days. He used to be fairly good friends with Stevie back then. We were going through old R2R tapes we found in a box, and some of them i believe are old stuff with double trouble and SRV jaming out and getting high / drunk in the studio...its hard to be sure, but sure as sounds like him talking and playing.
I like this list.
Mine would also include Link Wray and Les Paul, though I don't know who I'd swap out to put them there.
oh yeah. shawn lane. that man could play.
My bests: Eric Clapton
SRV
Mark Knopfler
Carlos Santana
are we talking rock guitarists? Because it's strange that Chet Atkins is not mentioned by anyone. Also I always find it wierd that George Harrison is considered a great guitarist.
Yea, imagine if it had been the other way around??
Damn.
Have you ever heard "While My Guitar Gently Sleeps"?
George Harrison was a great guitarist.
Chet Atkins is also a pretty damned good guitarist.
I mentioned last week that I heard his guitar cover of "Imagine" and I was blown away.
That top 100 list is missing some great ones. Peter Frampton isn't even on the list and Nokie Edwards isn't either. Nokie (Ventures) didn't play blues or classic rock, but he was a pioneer and was an inspiration to a lot of the great ones. You give Clapton or Frampton or Page an opportunity to do a jam session with Edwards and they all would probably jump in on that action.
Why is that? He is one of the best acoustic guitar players that I have ever heard. I do not think they are taking about electric guitar only, right?
Well yea, but isn't that the ONLY song he was great at?
"Best Rock Guitarist" != "Best Guitarist"
Sincerely,
Wes Montgomery
George Benson
Al Di Meola
Django Reinhardt
You really need to hear the rest of his music.
I though of a couple of others, but ShoogarBear beat me to it on Benson.
George Benson and Joe Walsh.
Forgot all about Django Reinhardt.
I agree, Frampton's work when he was with Humble Pie is right up there with most of the greatest ever.
It's gently WEEPS
And even though John Lennon is my favorite Beatle, that is probably my favorite Beatles song, even if it was written by Harrison and not Lennon/McCartney.
Joe Walsh should DEFINITELY be up there!!
LOL!!!
, that's what you get for typing fast in between work projects.
I'm disappointed in my self.
Sorry but I just can't consider any of the Beatles great musicians; vocalists, maybe and poets, yes. I like Beatles music very much.
WHAT THE ????
They were quite possibly the greatest musicians ever!!!
They revolutionized music as it was known.
They had a range that went from classic R&B Rock to Country to Psychedelic to Classical . . .
I would agree if we were saying that Ringo was one of the best drummers of all time or something. But I think Harrison was highly underrated as a guitarist. I wouldn't have him in my top 10 or anything, but mostly because it is already a crowded list. But he is one of the greats, imho.
But admittedly, most of the music the Beatles played didn't exactly give him a platform to showcase his abilities, like a lot of the guys on the list who play solos every song. His abilities are much more subtly presented, but still high up there nonetheless. Just my .02.
OMG!
John, and Paul could play numerous instruments including but not limited to piano, bass, lead guitar, sitar, and steel guitar and do them all very well...to say they are not good muscians to ludicrous.
Randy Rhodes
Yngwie
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Dimebag
Stevie Ray
BTW, Ringo was one of the greatest percussionists ever...no BS.
