It's a steal. Did you know how bad Cook and Evans were? They were bad. Ariza's defense and rebounding will fit right in.
    I agree that it's a steal. I didn't say it wasn't.

Doesn't seem to hurt the Lakers.

Well, other than running off one of the greatest bigmen to play the game a couple years too early and relegating the franchise to also ran status.

Plus that raping a woman bit.

Not a huge steal, but somewhat a steal.
That's too what I think about this trade.
Ariza is an interesting young player (I would like to have him on Spurs) but he isn't good enough to put the label huge steal on this trade.
Ariza offensive game is weak and his defense isn't that great : he is an energy player who hustle but he isn't a lockdown defender.

Good trade for the Lakers - Cook just duplicated what Radman does better, and Mo Evans will seemingly always be a bit player (although I've seen him tear it up at both ends occasionally, he's maddeningly inconsistent).

This was a win-win trade for the Lakers. Even if Ariza does nothing, they still got rid of Cook and his contract.

If Ariza ever even begins to live up to his potential, this makes the trade double as good.

Man, Cookie is getting ripped on the Lakers boards so I thought I could come here to escape. No such luck I guess.

I'm happy that he at least got traded to a good team and will get to play next to a guy of Dwight Howard's caliber. At least he didn't get sent to New York like Malik did. However, I am disappointed to see Brian go. The writing was on the wall, the Lakers are heavy in that position with Rad (now healed from snowboarding) and Turiaf. Evans is going to be missed too.

Besides all of that it made me have to update all the graphics/colors on Brian's site! lol

I thought of you when I read about this trade earlier.
    I know you love Cook.
I think the Magic might be a good fit for him.

As a Magic fan this trade disgusts me. Cook is a total stiff and Evans is way too inconsistent. I loved Ariza's rebounding and defense.

I'm not sure that Ariza was a that good fit as long SF with Spurs.
The reason why he didn't play with Orlando is that he can't shoot and teams often double Howard when he was playing. Ariza with Spurs would have allowed the other team to double Duncan. Spurs long SF must have at least a decent midrange jumper.

I don't even think Lakers are really interest in Ariza. IMO, this trade was more about dumping Cook's contract than getting Ariza.
The Spurs' answer = Ryan Gomes

    On the trade....

Good to see Ariza get back to LA, but he's going to have to log alot of minutes at the 2 guard because Walton and Odom have the 3-spot locked down.

Agree that this was primarily about dumping Cook's contract. They had two frontcourt players who's primary asset was perimeter shooting and one had to go. Looks like Cook was the guy.

Sucks that the Spurs didn't land him...I think he's a free agent this summer, though. So far this season, the Lakers look better than projected. Radmanovic is playing well off the bench. Bynum is looking like the sort of young big a team would build around. If they can get some good bench play from Ariza and perhaps move, say, Kwame Brown's expiring deal for another piece, then the Lakers could help the Spurs come the playoffs. They're not good enough to derail us, but they could be a bugger of a problem--if only extending a series--for Dallas or Houston in an early round.

I am sorry they traded him.

But now he is Hedo's teammate so you know I'll really root for him.

Because of his lack of shooting ability, I wonder if the Spurs would be interested this offseason.

I also like Gomes. He isn't the most athletic player of the league and isn't a really good defender but he is a very sound player.

Whoever Spurs chose as long SF, they will have to make a compromise given that they don't have the trade assets or cap space to get a close to perfect player. I just hope Spurs will get a long SF whatever compromise they do (athleticism, defense, offense, shooting, size...). The lack of a long SF is Spurs biggest weakness. Spurs should try to have at least a stopgap for this year (maybe Udoka can be this stopgap) before trying to get a long term answer this summer. The best case will be Spurs getting their long term answer this year but it seems kinda unlikely.

I don't see this trade as so bad for the magic...with howard they need most f all outside shoting and that's a skill that both cook and evans have (evans also a pretty good difense). Probably both these players are gonna have more playing time than in L.A. and I won't exclude, in time, a sharing of the starting role for Evans and Bogans...

Mo Evans was one of my favorite players...Let’s hope that this trade does not muck up the awaited Kwame & Mihm for Tim Duncan deal...

Trevor Ariza from the Magic to the Lakers for Brian Cook and Maurice Evans.

Nice trade by the Lakers. Getting Ariza for a couple of scrubs is a nice deal. (This is Spurs related since Ariza has been a mythical Long Three target for a couple of years . . .)
as opposed to spurs trades where we trade for players, that get cut
