I travel a lot and I have been using it on the road as well.
The downside was that I didnt have an analog phone with me in the airports and I looked silly talking into my laptop.
The solution however was found here with this little device at http://www.icpcparts.com/catalog2/vo...one-p-220.html
it is a USB phone that works with the magic jack and other Voip systems.
I now have a phone that looks like a small cell phone and works with Magic Jack on the road, the only downside is you dont dial from the pad .. you have to dial from the soft phone on your screen and switch to the headphone option. (except with Skype).
But it works great voice quality was excellent along with the magic jack . here are the two links for the magicJack and the cell Phone look alike.

Well, it's not exactly spam. It's because when you search google for "Magic Jack," this is the second result on the list. So anyone interested in the service is probably viewing the thread (thus the huge amount of views/posts ratio).

I just saw magic jack's ad campaign 3:30am CDT on TV Guide Network (TVGN) so you might think about delete/locking/moving this thread. But before you do, I have found this thread to be extremely helpful.

MagicJack is a cheap SIP device.
The smart guys over at www.Digium.com came up with the first SIP device covered under GPL. Currently they sell the IAXy, but do not offer phone service because they know of the inherent issues that I will touch on in a second. Instead they sell them so you can setup your own phone exchange (PBX). If you are here looking for cheep VoIP for your company I recomend Asterisk, Trixbox, and a Digium FXO.
Why do SIP devices work well for some people and not for others?
Major limitations of VoIP devices stem from: network latency issues between you and your ISP (20ms, 80ms, 120ms, 20ms ping times), packet (RTP) prioritization when handling bandwidth, max network connections and connection caching. The hardware/software on this particular device (Magic Jack) do not SEEM to overcome these inherent VoIP obstacles with any new technology. Until someone does, the breakdown will happen between the central hub and your router due to cable wear and poor installation and inside your network due to poor configuration and poor installation.
Yeah! I too got the magic jack and I was so frustrated with it...I could make call o.k. and I could hear other really well. But the receiving end could not hear me at all.
The live chat is the only human person you can communicate with to resolve your prob.
I had to go thru 3 people...all of which had diffrent ideas on how to solv the problem
here are some remedies....remove any virus protection, remove yahoo music, and music match. disable fire wall.
I did all that and still encountered a bit of a proble, sound got a little better.
Then I had a guy give me a list of 20 things to do which, go find this file, do this , do that, including rebooting... Well guess what...I lost connection on the reboot and could not get him back....so I gave up on his fix it method.
Then I had one person tell me to use only a cord phone. I was livid at this point......how many of us own cord phones......I have a cordless pone , and this contraption is suppose to work. bottom line.
last but not least, I threaten to go to report magic jack to ripoff scamp.com
But miraculously the phone began to work on the next reboot.
a lot times now, the first call will not connect very well, I have to make a 2nd attempt and then it will work fine.hmmmmm.. and this is on incoming also.
So with all this you potential buyers....remove yahoo music, musicmatch, firewall and virus. then install magic jack
after your install, replace your virus software...now for the firewall...I still have the windows fire wall on, but the mozlla firewall is disabled.
and I have DSL extreme.c as my highspeed interest service.
But I did save $300 by using this magic jac. I had packet8 for 4 yrs at 27.00 per month...VOIP![]()

this is my first post but i have no ax to grind. i just saw the forum on google and thought i would add my experiance with magic jack. i have it for two months and it is great. at the begining people i called would say i sounded somewhat garbled, sometimes, but i heard them crystal clear.. this turned out to be the usb extention cord they supply so that you can let the magic jack dangle out of sight.. once i plugged the mj directly into a usb port without the extension cord the problem never returned. it is for me a very reliable sevice.as reliable as my other vonage line. the free 411 is pretty crappy but free. i found if if you remain silent to the voice prompts a live person will come on after a minute or two. and that workes much better than the crappy voice recognition. if you don't want to leave your computer on when for example while you go to work or away for the weekend , leave it off. you can have it forward calls to your cell. if you do nothing the voice mail works even with your computer off. you can retrive your messages from any phone where ever you are. even when i was a little boy you couldn't get phone service for $1.50 per month. and this guy cuban something who i guess is just trying to protect the unwary. in this case you are just wrong. may i suggest a warm glass of milk and a joint.

I haven't had my magic jack long, but I love it. The only thing I didn't like about it is they don't have my area code, but WTF I'm using Washington DC

but for those of you who do want an opinion on the lil device -- it works for me with no problems for the past 3 months.. and I was able to get customer support from the reseller .. email me and I will tell you where ... I wont leave a link .

I see some people had problems and some didn't. I went thru some of the same stuff with Vonage at first a real pain but I wasn't switching back and now it's reliable for the most part. I run a home business and have an 800 # so I need more info before I would switch. I use Skype for my international business - no charge either, some connectivity problems but easily called back. How do incoming calls work? If your phone line is hooked to it does your phone ring the same?

New person here.... I just wanted to take a moment to thank those that posted their MagicJack stories. I did see the late night infomercial and decided to Google for any problems before kissing-off $40.00 cash and subjecting myself to customer service staff that is trained in stone-walling tactics. I also believe that many of you are right in addressing the obvious Magic Jack spammers/sales support postings. It's not logical why the same Magic Jack sales support people continue to re-enter their sales postings time and again; their obvious Magic Jack spammers/sales people.
In any case, thank you for the warnings.... I'll look elsewhere for VOIP or will play the wait-and-see game before taking any VOIP plunge. Besides, the cell carriers are dropping prices every month. Primary cell service is now the way to go... at least for me.

A buddy of mine has bought about 5 of these and can't stop raving about them. I called him and it sounded great. I have a Vosky Exchange 9000 that cost over 1000.00 that allows me to hook up 4 lines to my business phone system using Skype. When I subscribed to Skype Pro for 36.00 I can purchase a Skype-In number for 24.00. That's 60.00 a year for the same deal that Magic Jack has for 20.00 a year. With Skype I pay 3.9 cents connection charge plus 2.1 cents per minute to forward calls to my cell phone. With Magic Jack its free. I ordered 2 Magic Jacks last Friday and I'll repost once they arrive. My buddy says he can call Puerto Rico free. I have not been able to verify that.
By the way, I am not a spammer. I am a current Skype customer. Skype is free when you call Skype to Skype. You can call me on Skype at satman8000 if you have any information on Magic Jack. I thought Skype was good but this looks better.
