And screw Don Harris for his campaign to save #6 from Ginobili back in the day too.

I don't begrudge AJ his efforts as Mavericks coach or his choice to take that job. His job is to win games, including games against the Spurs. It might be unseemly to complain about officiating in public, but all in all, AJ's just trying to beat the Spurs; had the Spurs preferred that AJ not do that, they certainly could have made an effort to hire him. AJ is ideally suited to be an NBA coach and he's been quite successful in that position -- all good for him.
That should establish, I think, that any disagreement on my part to retiring #6 for AJ has nothing to do with the fact that he coaches the Spurs most bitter rival. For some time, I've thought that retiring #6 was inevitable because precedent says he should have that honor and because the swell of support for this honor began brewing in 2002. With all of that said, I believe that had AJ put up that career in other cities, there would be no talk of retiring his jersey. AJ was a limited player whose limitations were almost perfectly disguised by highly talented teammates. He could thrive by being picking among 2 or 3 other offensive options, particularly late in his long tenure in SA. He was never close to being an all-star (and deservedly so) and he lost his minutes to an older player less than 2 years after his greatest moment as a Spur.
I wouldn't retire AJ's number, but the Spurs are doing it and I'll support it.
I think AJ deserves his jersey to be retired.. do I think his stats warrant it? Not really, but Avery Johnson is what Spurs Basketball is all about.
Ask David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Sean Elliott and Gregg Popovich if they think he deserves his jersey retired.
and those people should decided and no one else?
