Sokoudjou looked like crap. I was completely wrong but he's still only 23 and will be a champ someday. He just needs time. I'm still not sold on Machida. He just studies the crap out of his opponents and knows how to slowly pick them apart. I don't really understand why people struggle with him, but I'd love to see him face the elite of 205.

I'm going to speak my piece that probably won't win me any friends.

I was disappointed in Chuck in the third round. Silva was tottering right at the edge of being knocked out - and instead of taking the risk of being hit and going for it, Chuck went for the easy decision win. It was the smart move, of course, but it didn't win him any respect from me.

Did anybody else happen to notice the piece of Sokoudjou's weave that fell out onto the floor during his fight?

    funny...no. hah

Machida (I think he is too small for LHW really) is a very very smart fighter, a lot like Okami. Seeing them fight would be a fascinating technical match but an absolute snooze fest.

Sokoudjou simply was not aggressive. He was freaked out.

It was announced during the UFC 79 "Nemesis" post-fight press conference by company president Dana White who got the bonuses for knockout, submission and fight of the night.

The fight of the night, which is no surprise - went to Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva. Both fighters received an additional $50,000 to their contracted purses (Liddell received $500,000, Silva a cool $150,000).

Submission of the night honors were given to Georges St. Pierre for his armbar victory over Matt Hughes in their interim Welterweight le rubber match. The armbar victory gave him an additional $50,000, which adds to his $160,000 official fight purse.

Due to lack of options, knockout of the night went to Eddie Sanchez, for his stoppage of the newcomer Sao Palelei. Sanchez received $50,000 on top of his contracted salary.

Nate Mohr suffered a torn ACL in last night's match with Manny Gamburyan when Gamburyan used an ankle lock on him. We haven't gotten any updates on Wanderlei Silva or James Irvin, who were both hospitalized and given MRIs.

It was confirmed during the UFC 79 "Nemesis" post-fight press conference by company president Dana White that the show drew 11,075 fans for a $4.9 million gate.

According to White, that is the largest live gate for any MMA show in the United States for the year of 2007.

Yeah and Chuck gets a ton of money off the PPV buys as well. He made something like 17 mil last year in all his fights. I am sure GSP gets a chunk of the PPV buys as well he probably walked away with half a mil or more on that fight. These guys are still underpaid when compared to boxing but it is coming around.

    Clementi...

Sanchez... (and he got KO of the Night bonus? uggh!!)

Machida.... damn good but frustrating to watch usually. Surprised he was able to finish Sokoudjou, given his history. Chuck vs Machida for #1 contender after Rampage and Forrest fight?

Chuck... excellent showing by Chuck. He looked his better (physically) than he has in his past few fights, and he showed some new stuff (for him). Spinning backfist and takedowns, for example. Wand brought out the best in him. Very entertaining fight.

    GSP... He's just too good...

Very disappointed in Sok's performance...he looked lost. I think he has a big future in the sport though. Definitely needs more work off his back. Might need to branch out beyond Quest at some point. Loved the predator mask, but that was the only good thing he did all night...

It seemed like Silva fought for entertainment value more than anything, and he didn't land that big punch...he basically said as much before the fight (said something about win or lose he'll be back because he has a 4 fight deal). Seems like clinching more and throwing more leg kicks would've been a better gameplan. He certainly brought it and represented well though. The only way I'll be disappointed is if he pisses hot. Everything about him was class before, during, and after the fight. Wand's chin was crazy in that fight...many of those punches that he survived have dropped many before him. His ridiculous cardio saved him from being KO'd. Would have liked to have seen that be a 5 rd fight. I wish they could designate certain non- le fights as 5 rds. Especially top contender fights, and LW fights. 3 rds isn't enough for certain matchups. Dana wants 5 rd non- le and 7 rd le but it's not up to him.

GSP is just on a different level...that judo throw was just the icing on the cake. His way of showing Hughes how much more skilled he is. No way in Serra beats him again. I want to see GSP vs Fitch at some point...

Dana is still screwing these guys i mean when you are on a card for a UFC event and making 8-10 grand a fight, something is wrong.

No, thats not accurate. We haven't the faintest idea what these guys make. Thats simply a "to show and to win" pay.

Overall, it was a good night of fights.

Clementi and Guillard was fun to watch -- especially post fight
    Sanchez and Palalei -- ok..
Chuck and Wandy -- good fight and good win for Chuck. I was a bit disappointed at him not trying to finish the fight. Watching the clock and grinding out the win is stealing a page from Tim Sylvia. He had the fight won, but he also had Sylvia teetering. I guess he just didn't want to risk losing from a wild punch.
GSP vs Hughes -- wow did GSP look freaking huge. I don't think I have ever seen him look that big. If he stays that size, there is nobody that's going to beat him. He just mauled Hughes from start to finish. I loved Hughes saying "I know" when Lawler said something to effect of "You're still ok"
Machida and Sokodjou was another good showing for Machida. I knew Machida was going to be a matchup problem (for anyone). He has too much skill and even though he looks small, I think he'd matchup well against anyone at 205. I read that him and Chuck might fight next. This is very bad for Chuck as Machida is as much of a counter puncher as Chuck, but has great kicks. It'll be like the Jardine fight.

Yes it is accurate, the only guys in the UFC that are making good money are the stars that get a cut of the PPV buys. You think Dana is giving a relative unknown on the undercard a cut of that, not on your life. That was the bone of contention with Randy and the UFC. He claimed he got about 200 grand a fight but the UFC released records showing he was paid about a mil for his last 2 fights thanks to his cut of the PPV. When you see a payout for a lesser fighter of about 10-15 grand that is it. He is not getting any portion of the ppv buys.

You need to re-read some of the writes ups that explain UFC pay structure after this Randy mess.

Start with whatever Kevin Iole wrote for yahoo.

Who by the way was bashed by nearly every blog, website and Randy himself only to be vindicated.

All I am saying is we have NO CLUE what they make.

The Randy mess was about bonuses and who was telling the truth. That was why the UFC came out with those records. Randy was claiming he was making 250 grand a fight and acting as if his PPV bonsuses were not that high. The UFC proved otherwise and Randy was embarassed. What i am saying is the lesser fighters who have little room to negotiate are still getting screwed. They get a certain amount of money to show up, to win and maybe a bonus but not PPV revenue percentages, only the big stars get that. Maybe the UFC throws them an additional bone here and there but it is not likely to be of much significance.

We really don't know what they make...it's still not enough in general, but there is a lot of money being passed in the lockerroom...

Ok, well we certainly agree here.

Also something to keep in mind though, the UFC lets them have those sponsor banners free of charge. I would hazard a guess some of those guys would rather have those banners than double pay. o and Wand have their own clothing lines and I am sure they make a ton from it. even KOS does. NFL, NHL NBA etc do not allow their guys to flaunt outside sponsors like that.

But again why should the small guys get PPV splits? I certainly do not think anyone ordered the PPV or bought a ticket to see Douglas Evans.

The UFC hooks these guys up with big time sponsors as time goes on. If they stick around they get their due.

The smaller guys have been getting screwed for sure but its getting better and better. Conversations such as this probably won't happen near as much in a few years. They have actually been dying down a lot since last year. As popular as MMA is becoming, its still a veyr new sport and revenue is still gaining ground. UFC gives away a lot of free fights to help it grow.

I guess people don't understand what undercard boxers get per fight? The disparity for top fighters is the difference, not the lower-end fighters. It's also a matter of how much you can draw.
