    Texas A&M Rugby dominates.

Do they have an actual NCAA rugby league or is it all club teams?

club, but there is playoffs and a national championship. some schools give scholarships, but most don't. ironically, the only NCAA rugby teams are a handful of women's sides.

Cool. I just found out recently that A&M and Texas have hockey teams. UTSA has one too!

Figures, they would get a hockey team before a football team!

Foreskins better take advantage of a Dallas team essentially taking the week off next Sunday. There is no way Philadephia or Foreskins beat Dallas in a playoff situation with a healthy rested team - which it will be when the playoffs start for them in three weeks. Keep in mind Romo had an injured thumb in the first half of the Philthydelphia game and that prevented Dallas from exploiting the Eagles as they did in the first meeting. BTW, Terry Glenn is going to join the roster this week - he will add to the mix.

Let's look at the near term future of the teams in the NFC East.

Look at the front seven for the Foreskins. Most all of them overpaid (because they were free agents and not drafted) - not to mention the fact most of them are in their 30s. All the money is tied up in generally underachieving offensive players who often cannot stay on the field - Portis (has to have an overpaid backup in Betts) Moss (with the glass body) Randel El (above average but that's about it). This team is capped out and their best quaterback is a 36 year old career backup. Joe Gibbs better consider retiring after this year before the defensive rot sets in.

Philadelphia is also on the way down. McNabb is literally on his last legs and is an Eagle veteran over 30 years old. You know what happens with the Eagles organization when a player gets over 30 years old. They get rid of them about 75% of the time. McNabb will get neither sympathy nor loyalty from management. Westbrook is by far their best player but he is just about used up. He has a 29 year old body and 40 year old knees.

The team on the way up is in Dallas if you look at the cold hard facts. Most of their key players (with the notable exception of Owens) are entering their prime as a number of them (Ware, Witten, Barber, Spencer, James, Canty etc.) are 25 years old or younger. The quarterback is now in place, rolling, and locked up for six years.

There is plenty of cap room and even an extra 1st round draft pick on the way. The next five years are going to be Dallas controlling the NFC East and very possible the NFC overall, with the Giants being the Red Headed Stepchild (second place most of the time with some good young players as well as some knuckleheads like Shockey, Burris, and that fat ass, big mouth running back Jacobs who can't stay healthy) with the aging Foreskins and the cheapskate Eagles bringing up the rear.

The Redskins have been decimated by injuries (and murders) this season. Had the team played much of the year with a healthier secondary I think we'd be seeing a difference. FFS they nearly beat the Cowboys earlier this year and they didn't even bother to cover TO.

The difference isn't very big at all, but the health is.

Anything can happen in one game, but now that Romo doesn't hold for FGs the Cowboys are already better than last year.

If history tells us anything, the NFC East will always be a battle no matter what the records are.

Uhh, you are an idiot. The Eagles have no chance to make the playoffs. I don't see the Redskins or the Giants as a threat to the Cowboys. Beat them before, we can do it again.
    got outplayed by Washington...at home.

Not to take away the win, Dallas made enough plays and the Skins didn't. However, to say that any playoff team is not a threat to any other is completely ignoring the state of today's NFL (especially the NFC).

As good as Romo is this year, compared to the other top QBs, he has games where he does everything in his power to give the game to the other team.

That was the game where they were reeling to recover from - what was at the time - Taylor's injury. The free safety play was just atrocious.

Doughty has been much much better the past 3 weeks.

    Unfortunately, though, that's true.

The Redskins are about 20-25 mil over the cap.

To put that in perspective, the next closest are the Ravens, who are about 5 mil under.

No problem for Dan-o. Just another ticket hike.

Actually, they should be in pretty decent shape. They do have some contracts that escalate, but they also have a lot of dead money coming off as well.

Say what you will about their fiscal policies, but the Redskins manage the cap as well as anybody in the league. I truly believe that there GMs in the league who don't understand the nuances of the cap, but that's not true with the Skins.

Plus, you can't trust the media reports. I checked 3 different sites (USAToday, ESPN, and FoxSports) and got 3 different payroll rankings across the board (FWIW, WAS & DAL are relatively equal at around $120 million).

And there are very few reporters (Len Pasquarelli - this means you) that understand how a backloaded contract works.

That's not remotely close to being correct.

Nobody is "over" the salary cap right now. There are teams who have payrolls that excede the cap (WAS, but also Dallas and New England and half the rest of the league), but because of the ways the individual contracts are structured, they come in under the cap total.

that's what it's called. (and Taylor's contract will actually be on the books at least through next year)

The Redskins continually renegotiate contracts with bonuses to get under the cap every year. Historically, the owner cannot help himself when he gets a chance to sign some big name free agent. Eventually, even when the cap goes up, base salary has to be converted to bonus.

The Redskins have NOT done a good job with the cap. Last year may have been the first time since "Little Danny" bought the team they did not spend money like drunk sailors in free agency.

Washington has not had enough high draft picks to stock the roster with younger, cheaper players. They have always been too heavily geared to buying older, more expensive free agents.

Dallas is projected to be approximately $18MM under the cap net year, so they will have some flexibility to not only keep the younger players that produce for them, they will also have room to cherry pick for a key player or two outside the organization.

Not to mention, an extra #1 will allow for room to move up to get one key player or trade down and bring several players where youth is needed, like corner, wide receiver, and running back (see ya Julius Jones - a Parcells draft bust, there were too many of those)

Actually, about every other year they show fiscal restraint. This past offseason, they really only added London Fletcher (who has been terrific). 2 years ago, they did add Andre Carter and Archuleta and Randle El. But 3 years ago, their big free agency splash was...Casey Rabach.

All-in-all, watch this offseason. They'll add a couple of pieces that they like and not be forced to part with anybody that they have that they want to keep (so long as that player doesn't ask for a completely unreasonable deal.

The Redskins have people whose sole job is to study the salary cap. Nobody in the media (or internet poster) understands its nuances as well as they do.

Washington has not had enough high draft picks to stock the roster with younger, cheaper players. They have always been too heavily geared to buying older, more expensive free agents.
First, they have every pick for next year. Second, the players that they have traded those picks away for have almost always outperformed the player who was taken with that pick.

In the past, draft picks were typically undervalued by teams. However, the pendulum has since swung too far in the other direction and now teams vastly over-value draft picks. (Randy Moss' production for a 4th round pick? Nobody was willing to give up a first day pick for that?)

Dallas is projected to be approximately $18MM under the cap net year, so they will have some flexibility to not only keep the younger players that produce for them, they will also have room to cherry pick for a key player or two outside the organization.
Once again, be careful of these projections. You go to 5 different sources and you'll get 5 different numbers - some of them very different than the others.

With seed clinched, Cowboys not likely to rely on starters vs. Redskins
By JAIME ARON, AP Sports Writer
    December 24, 2007

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Brad Johnson, start getting loose. The Dallas Cowboys may finally let you throw a pass.

As Tony Romo's backup, Johnson has been limited to handoffs and kneel-downs in a few games this season. But with the Cowboys having clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC, there's little reason for Romo to play every down -- or to throw every pass -- in the regular-season finale Sunday at Washington.

Coach Wade Phillips refused to put it in those words Monday. Instead, he sternly said the Cowboys would be playing to win because of the "integrity of the game," an important point since the Redskins need a victory to make the playoffs. He added that his players will be motivated by the same factors that motivated them the previous 15 games: Pride, fans, family.

"We always have something to play for," he said.

Yet Phillips acknowledged that players who are hurt may be given the day off -- especially Terrell Owens, who is definitely out. He also threw out the tidbit that the last three teams that represented the NFC in the Super Bowl lost their finales, trying to downplay the notion of needing momentum going into the playoffs.

Bottom line: The Cowboys (13-2) will do their best for four quarters, but won't necessarily have their best players out there the entire time. And with Romo already getting over a bruised thumb on his throwing hand, it only makes sense that Johnson will get his first meaningful action since joining the Cowboys last offseason.

"There's a lot of considerations and we'll consider them all," Phillips said. "But we're still approaching the game to win the game. ... We want to win 14 games. You know, 13 is the most ever for this franchise, which is a storied franchise. So that would be quite an accomplishment. Somebody may play for that. I'll be coaching for that, I'll tell you that."

Phillips seemed to have fun being coy about revealing his plans for the finale. Asked when he'll decide, Phillips smiled and said, "I'd say Sunday, probably 3:15," which just so happens to be when the game kicks off. (It was supposed to be at noon, but the league announced the change Sunday.)

"It's a matter of me not telling anybody until we decide to tell you," Phillips said.

Owens' injury provided a good reminder of the need to be cautious in the finale, because one play can change everything.

Trying to gain extra yards after a catch, Owens spun and wound up being tackled awkwardly. An MRI confirmed the original diagnosis of a high ankle sprain. He's expected to be back in time for Dallas' playoff opener, Jan. 12 or 13.

"I know he's going to be in a boot for a while, but we'll go from there," Phillips said.

While T.O. is leaving the lineup, T.G. -- Terry Glenn -- is coming back.

Glenn had two preseason knee operations, but has been practicing for several weeks. After nearly being ready to play last weekend against Carolina, Glenn will get to show what he can do against the Redskins.

"It won't be a full game, but I'd like to get him playing, get him back in the rhythm of it, catch some passes," Phillips said. "If he wants to start, he can start."

Getting in synch with Glenn might be the best reason to let Romo play.

Coaches might also want to see how Romo can do with a game plan that doesn't feature Owens. The Cowboys moved the ball much less effectively after T.O. went out against the Panthers, mainly because they were being defended differently. It's also worth noting that while Romo has thrown for a club-record 36 touchdowns, he has only three the last three games.

"I think he is all right," Phillips said.

Cornerback Terence Newman is a candidate to sit out after adding to the list of injuries he's battled through all season. Center Andre Gurode missed the last game with a knee problem, so he's another who might not be used.

One last clue to the playing-time puzzle is that Phillips wants to help players hit milestones. That means he'd like Jason Witten to get the six catches he needs to become only the second tight end in NFL history to hit 100, or to get nine and set the single-season record at the position; and he'd like Marion Barber to get the 19 yards he needs to hit 1,000.

Of course, those objectives came with a disclaimer: "As long as that works in with us being able to win."

You are right about the NFC and to their credit Washington is playing very well right now. They could have packed it in after struggling on the field then having to deal with the Sean Taylor tragedy. Gibbs and his staff have done a great job keeping this team focused.

The NFC East has again proved that they are, IMO, the best division in football.
    Amen to that.
