I think the notion of a long 3 is intended as a compliment to the existing Big 3. Unless you're getting another player who's on the level of the Big 3 -- and Prince, for all that he is, clearly is not on that level -- you don't break up the Big 3 to get a long 3.

Manu for Prince would be a huge, huge step backwards for the Spurs.

I agree with this statement. The 'long 3' we have talked about has been envisioned as an addition to the existing 'big 3' we have right now. I'm changing the vision to include somebody who has some star potential, in addition to the traits we have sought in our long 3.

Of course, the big motivation for this trade proposal was the age difference. Manu is getting older and Tayshaun is still young, so this would be, in my eyes, a trade aimed at reloading an already good, albeit older team.

Tayshaun won't bring the killer instinct or ability to close games that Manu would bring, but how long is he going to be able to do that for? One or two more years max, I predict, without losing a lot of his quickness (barring any major injuries).

I'm not saying that this is a monster of a good deal for the Spurs -- of course, in the short term, it will bring whoever gets Manu a legitimate SG/SF starter or sixth man. But take a look at how far Shaq has declined in three years, and how that trade by the Lakers has enabled them to build around one young star and bring in some additional young talent. Couldn't we do the same with Parker, and keep our own dominant big man the way the Lakers couldn't?

To make the deal a little more even, we could ask for a legit backup PG in Lindsey Hunter:

    Detroit Pistons

    Incoming Players
    Manu Ginobili
    Salary: $9,079,811 Years Remaining: 3
    PTS: 19.2 REB: 4.6 AST: 4.3 PER: 25.50

Outgoing Players: Lindsey Hunter, Tayshaun PrinceSan Antonio Spurs

    Incoming Players
    Lindsey Hunter
    Salary: $2,250,000 Years Remaining: 1
    PTS: 1.8 REB: 0.5 AST: 1.8 PER: 8.81

    Tayshaun Prince
    Salary: $8,675,620 Years Remaining: 4
    PTS: 13.6 REB: 5.1 AST: 3.0 PER: 15.79

    Outgoing Players: Manu Ginobili

I don't see a 2-3 combo of Manu and Hamilton making much sense, either. Thanks, but no thanks.

Yea, can you say logjam @ SG? Rip Hamilton, Manu Ginobili, Rodney Stuckey, Arron Afflalo, Flip Murray.

I would trade Rip for Manu, but for Tayshaun it doesn't really work.

I would be suprised if Detroit even wanted Manu in the city after the way he ass raped the Pistons in the finals.

    Amateur GMism.

You don't break up a winning core unless they are clearly finished with winning. How many times do I have to repeat this?

Manu is a vital cog in the spurs system. He's got the killer's instinct and a winning at ude that come in handy when it comes to play-offs. A big NO for this trade.

Spurs fans who don't notice or appreciate Manu's contributions to the Spur's DYNASTY really concern me.

No way. I LOVE Prince, but there's virtually no one in the NBA that I'd trade away our closer for.

Now, I'd offer Finley or anyone else but our big 3 to try and get Prince. But no Manu.

Or perhaps savior? Cause you know, he is the team savior on many occasions.

We very clearly disagree about this subject, because I can't envision a single reasonable scenario in which I would think it would be a good idea to trade Manu Ginobili for Tayshaun Prince. I wouldn't count on Tayshaun having "some star potential" -- at this point, Tayshaun is what Tayshaun is going to be. He's a nice player, but he's not a star and he's never going to be one. It would be pretty dumb, IMO, for the Spurs to deal Ginobili at this point, but particularly to send him out in a deal that leaves the Spurs with less talent.

Have you started working on the deal to send out Tim Duncan to bring in a younger player with star potential, too?
