All good points. But the States coming together under the pretense of "We run this place, not the Fed" would solve a lot of our problems.

That's never going to happen because the proletariat believes that the Feds must be involved. That's our politics these days, who can impose their worldview on social issues onto everyone else. The federal level is much more exciting than simply the state and local level. I'm thinking of starting the Leave Me The Alone party, but it will probably die before its launch due to apathy.
