Perceiving an overreaction =/= observing an overreaction.
Which is not to say that I don't think there are times when people may feign offense in order to take advantage of a percieved slight, but there's virtually no way to know for certain when it is or is not happening.
Perceiving I would say, after listening to the explanation given by the customer, and the employee, if both the stories matched, and I asked the customer what they were offended by, thats how I could determine it.but there's virtually no way to know for certain when it is or is not happening.

Still doesn't work. You can't accurately judge whether or not someone else is offended by something based on whether or not you would be offended by the same thing.
Someone could take offense to my insistence that the sky is blue, for example, and I would think that was ing asinine, but it wouldn't mean that they weren't genuinely offended.

You're not allowed to decide when/if someone else is genuinely offended.
You may not agree that you/someone else has acted offensively, you may not believe that the offended party is genuinely as offended as they claim to be, you may think that they're feigning offense in order to "get something for free," and you may even be correct in your assumption, but there will never be a way for you to conclusively know/prove that assumption. And, to claim that you actually possess this ability is arrogance on a level that is surprising even for you.
