Anyone getting excited about standings this early in the game is an idiot. So many things will change by the time the playoffs start. I'm just glad we have a ton of home games left and a bunch of cake teams to play.

Standings are based on win %. Games behind/ahead is a simpistic technique to enable people who can't/don't want to compute win %. Games behind/ahead assumes that every team has a 50% chance of winning or losing a game.

    Right now Spurs (39-17) have a win% of 0.696
    Lakers (41-18) have a win % of 0.695

Spurs are in 1st place. Lakers have payed 3 more games. The games behind/ahead method assumes that Spurs will win 1.5 and lose 1.5 of those 3 games, putting their record at 40.5-18.5, hence being 0.5 games behind LA (41-18).

However, teams don't win at 50% rates. The Spurs win at 69%.

To use a simpler example, let's take 2 teams. Team A is 20-1, Team B is 23-2. Team B is "ahead" by 1 game. But Team A is not likely to lose its 2nd game anytime soon. Team A has the better win % and is therefore ahead.

PS: We look like Lakersground jumping with delight at the prospect of the #1 seed in freakin February. I don't give a rat's ass if we are 1 or 6. We have the most depth and the most experience.

LG was ecstatic about being #1 because of all the that happened in the offseason. Nobody believed things would be this good so fast for us. But we know more than anyone what it takes to win a championship and we are not crowning ourselves just yet. Still need to get Bynum and Ariza back and healthy before we are a complete team.

LOL uh okay given you're roster how the did you come to that conclusion??? This team knows what it takes to win it all more than the Spurs, you know maybe a little more than Suns at best.

    Not sure about that...

    and the most experience
    Agree.

I don't see the Lakers winning it this year.
Next year, very likely. But hopefully you guys don't win
it this year either. I like the fact that you guys haven't
    repeated.

And they still will be unable to fulfill that goal, thats why they are not a dynasty because they lack continuity.

Generally... you count by losses. When you're vying for top seeds, losses are far rarer than wins. So you count by losses, since the Spurs are likelier to win two games than to lose one.
exactely...and vice versa for the bad teams

...furthermore every team has to play 82games and while we can win every one of them, the lakers cant erease the loss!

after all it doesnt matter...i dont feel the topseat is woth that much (the last 2 years it was coz it ensured you to only play one of the big 3 SA/PHO/DAL)...every team can beat every team and a 8-beating-1 wouldnt be an upset like last year!

that said, homecourt would be nice but I also feel like we are better in kind of an underdog role!

Who cares Spurs far superior to Lakers in toughness, championship experience and what it takes to win a championship. The GAP is much greater than the current standings!

Games ahead/behind and win % aren't as important. When you're following standings, the only number to look at is losses. You can't EVER make those up.

Take a look at the Spurs and the Mavs schedule for the Month of March.

The Spurs have a bunch of road games and in fact a bunch of games in the first 26 days of the month.

Next week Mavs start 9 of 10 at home and they have the best home record in the league.

My prediction is that by the time March is finished the Mavs will have caught and or passed the Spurs in the Division

So yes, a lot can change between now and Apirl 16th.

Spurs have played 2 less games than LA, so obviously, according to the Laker trolls, the Spurs will lose them both.

Cause they are obviously the far inferior team to a chucking ballhog shooting guard, a puss spaniard, and a mentally weak center that gets tossed out of a 20 point blowout game by a center who just nudges him.

    Yeah, I'm frightened.

Yea we lost to Portland tonight. We still have 2 more wins than you, but 1 more loss so that puts your team at #1. But don't expect things to stay like that for long.

I agree. Look for the Fakers to fade as they normally do and the Spurs to gradually increase their lead in the West.

So losing a CLOSE game on a back-to-back against an opponent who is 22-8 on their homecourt means the Lakers are now fading? I love the San Antonio logic.

The Rose Garden is our kyrptonite. We haven't won their in ages, I don't know what it is but we ALWAYS play like in that arena. And we are still down Bynum, Mihm, Radman, and Trevor Ariza. When we get our squad back we're going to this league up.

    here you go:

what you're gonna need when you EAT YOUR STUPID WORDS.
with this squad, you have NO ROOM to talk trash - they have yet to prove themselves, and they have never even played a game all together.

so just shut up and prepare to EAT YOUR WORDS.
