Wasn't Tootsie a white guy playing a white woman?
Me neither. I think the outrage is pretty ridiculous considering that the only other way you could cast the part would be to have a black actor in "whiteface" for part of the film. Or cast two actors.
Much ado about nothing.
Wasn't Tootsie a white guy playing a white woman?
I don't really think there IS much outrage, if those message board posts are the best they could do.
Seriously?
The comparison is pretty spot-on, actually.
I hope the music is better.
as long as it's funny, i don't give a who's playin who...looks like it has potential!
Right, I was kind of going along with the actors playing actors changing for a role angle.
It's funny that the two black-men-playing-white-folk movies I can think of had more to do with crime -- White Chicks and True Idendity -- while the white-to-black movies had more to do with the white guys furthering their careers.
Or how bout the overtly blatantly racist appearance of Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's, with thick glasses, buck teeth, trying to be asian.
Leon ftmfw!
Or Charlton Heston playing a Mexican in Touch of Evil.
Or Sean Penn playing someone with a mental disability in I Am Sam.
Or Hank Azaria and Robin Williams playing flamboyantly gay in The Birdcage.
Right. Charlie Chan was a stereotypical character that was always played by a white dude, but I guess back then people didn't know exactly how cringeworthy that stuff would be today.
Now had Downey played that role a few years back instead of Larry Fishburne, I could understand the controversy -- but I still wouldn't have any hard and fast answers as to what would be artistically acceptable.
He's taking our jobs too!
best black guy as a white guy!

"I'm a lead farmer mother er"
What they couldn't find a black dude to act white?
Tiger Woods needs to rehab his knee
also San Antonio is mentioned in this movie, go us
Lenny Henry didn't want to repeat himself.
It never ceases to amaze me how so many people keep a supply of self-righteous indignation on tap to be brought out for knee-jerk responses to issues.
At first, I thought it was Don Cheadle
i heard he took something that actually darkened his skin. Can you say Soul Man![]()

yup. makes it interesting though.
The people who complain are idiots, the people who made those comments don't even know what the movie is about. How can you comment on something you don't know?
You just say it loud enough, and call anyone who disagrees with you an idiot. The really hard part is deciding whether you want to work for CNN, Fox, or ESPN.
